Insanity???
Yeah, I know: it's rare, and NOS, and a fine shifter for its time, but still:

I simply don't get it!

Yeah. I get paying a premium for rare/special items, but when you could have an absolutely fantastic, top-of-the-line bike for the cost of your RD, I feel like it's gone a little far. But hey, people pay tens of thousands of dollars for old baseball cards, and you can't even ride 'em...

When a Porsche or Ferrari can set you back well over $100k why would you begrudge someone from being passionate about their cycling collection? Most of us in the states can't comprehend how devalued the dollar is, but some of these purchases aren't as shocking if seen in the context of the Euro or the native buyer's currency. You can't buy decent art for $4k, what can you really collect that is rare for that price? Sometimes in cycling, unlike with vintage cars, there seems to be a lot of jealousy. I just don't get it. Good for the buyer, good for the seller!

So how did they work? There's usually a reason why components are rare.

Yes, I will bite. I love stuff like this. There's a nut that looks like it controls tension on the claw pivot (but who knows what it does?) and another sliding thing with an indicator that secures with another nut. What do those bits do?
