Using conventional brake levers, you could've turned them around and gotten the lever body out of the way to gain more bar to grip near the ends. Those bars look awfully narrow as well.

They are awfully narrow but I've actually grown quite fond of them on my single speed, and I realized the same thing about the brake levers but by then...that bike was half way into becoming this
Same home made handlebars but with access to the ends, actually enjoyable.
