1st catch of 2012: Pug content

Picked this up last night! Peugeot PS28. Fun colours and cleaning up very well. All 105 (indexed!) except the hubs, which look like Maillard and the headset, which is unmarked. The paint is in great shape as is everything else. The only pain is the previous owner liked reflective tape. A lot. The stuff is a bear to remove but I'm taking it slow and steady. Anyway here she is, halfway through clean-up. Does anyone know what tubing this bike was spec'd with? I can't imagine the Tange Prestige mtb tubing decal is accurate?

WTF is that on the back side of the head tube??? A LUBE NIPPLE?

big_heineken 01-03-12 08:53 AM

Why do you call it MTB tubing? Tange Prestige was used to make plenty of road bikes.

And the thing on the back of the head tube is a pump peg.

devinfan 01-03-12 08:58 AM

Sorry - the pic doesn't show the "mtb" before the "CR-MO" on the decal. I would've thought Prestige was over the head of this bike, and the mtb threw me off. I don't know why someone would put a different tubing decal on this bike, it just didn't make sense to me, but what do I know?

Nice score. Is it your size?
No doubt MiamiJim will know all about it, hopefully he will chime in.

Cant say much about the Canadian market models other than that were made under license by Procycle. 'Velosport' was an in house brand of Procycle. T-Mar can provide more Canadian info.

Barchettaman 01-03-12 12:39 PM

I feel a peverse sense of satisfaction that finally someone has found a Peugeot that Miamijim didn't know everything about..... Only kidding

Miamjim's just gonna say it's not a real Peugeot because it's Canadian so it doesn't count!

One last pic. I like the little swimming guy because I'm a swim coach:

It holds the pump in place. This is the first time you've seen one????

skyrider 01-03-12 05:03 PM

I have an identical coloured schemed Pug cdn made, but a PS 20 with Exage gruppo and its sticker is EX 4130 triple butted cro mo Ishiwata if thats any help.

devinfan 01-03-12 06:49 PM

Thanks skyrider, Ishiwata is more what I would have expected. If I can confirm it I'll see if I can get the correct decal. Identifying vintage bikes is hard enough without people adding fake decals into the mix!

BentLink 01-03-12 06:55 PM

That looks like it's in great shape.

Any of that stem left in the steerer?

It's a fairly modern innovation. This is C&V.

Good question. I'm going to re-pack the headset anyway just as a matter of course so I'll pull the stem and see. The paint seems to be of very good quality, it's cleaning up so well and it had lots of black marks on it in addition to that cursed tape. I can't wait to finish getting off all of the residue so that I can wax it. Oh and I measured it - it's a 54cm, actually a little bigger than I thought, which is great. The only thing I may change out is the bar tape, because it's looking a little tired. I am debating between white again, orange, or celeste. Any suggestions?

Ishiwata and they are pretty nice bikes, in my opinion...

Aha! Perfect. Thank you very much, Randy. I'm going to try to scare up those decals. I knew the Tange Prestige thing was off, but the decal looked legit, so it was confusing. Also, I thought it was very weird original owner put the decal in such a discreet place if they were trying to impress people with their fake tubing decal, which is even weirder. Anyway I'm glad to know the actual tubing because that's the kind of thing that drives me up the wall if I don't know it for some reason.

Chombi 01-03-12 08:17 PM

Ehhhh.......a good number of our Canuckistani neighbors are French speaking and have French names, so this bike has the proper "accent" to be a Peugeot!:thumb:

I think BentLink was making reference to the fact that both the seat post and the stem look to raised above the Minimum Insertion marks. that would be a sign the bike is too small

nice looking bike though

Many Tange frames had this "nipple" on the headtube. My '87 Tempo has one. I suppose it could be a pump peg for a TT frame pump, but I'm not sure. This nipple is perpendicular to the HT, which means it is angled down a bit from horizontal (at least my Tempo's is), so it is not in the best orientation to hold a horizontally mounted TT pump. Is there any other possible function for this HT nipple?

Barchettaman 01-04-12 03:14 AM

White bar tape would look the best IMO but obviously will get grubby quickly. Which is a look I actually like, shows the bike is in use.
Apparently Microtex tape is easy to clean up like new.
