Classy color. I'm almost done painting mine. Will you be putting a full set of decals on it?

I've changed my mind on this a couple times, but I'm leaning towards not putting the seat tube decals on. Looks more rando than race this way, and aesthetically it makes more sense when I put the rack and fenders on.

Are you going for the stock paint scheme on yours?

FWIW, the original seat tube decals weren't clearcoated, only the down tube decals were. I did the same figuring I can always change my mind. I did get the full set from Softley/cyclomondo.

Mine is Rustoleum Regal Red with the iconic black head tube lugs and gold lug lining. When I was researching paint, I found myself on vintage tractor restoration sites. They are as nuts as us. Since my frame has been straightened after a bad crash and not possibly restorable, I am considering Massey Fergeson decals for the downtube. Reynolds decals on seattube and fork blades for sure.

Built up and 2,000 miles later. Very, very much fun bike. The wheels are off a TREK 1200 with 4mm of spacer and axle removed. An IRD freewheel with a KMC 5-6 speed chain works fine with the 47 year old delrin derailleurs. The noisy Lyotard pedals had to go and instead of hunting for suspect French replacements, I tapped the cranks. The saddle came off my previous commuter, Rustines hoods from VO, new Velox plugs and tape from my LBS, Koolstop pads from Amazon, misc. cable and housing was laying around. Everything else is original to the bike.

Still making changes to mine. Replaced the Mafacs w/ Campy side-pulls, fitted a shorter stem and vintage-look Drillium 48-34 cranks.

@vtchuck Another fine PX. Did you tap it for the Campy RD or did it arrive in your hands that way and is that the original Stronglight crank or a different crank? I can't tell from the photos. Just a clean, beautiful build.

Had it tapped by my LBS. The original SL cranks were 52-45, 170mm.... both deal breakers for me. I need 175mm and smaller rings in my old age. The cranks are Holdsworth branded 175mm & 110 bcd from PlanetX (UK).

FWIW, if you follow the link in my sig file, you can see larger, better quality photos.

@vtchuck Really nicely done. I am looking forward to finally starting work on my PX soon on bad weather days. For now riding has taken precedence. Mine also has the original 52-42 rings which I will either enhance with a triple or go for a different compact crank.

Thank you. If you go with the triple, you might want to check out Red Clover Components up here in VT. He makes triplizers & rings. Do you think you'll be able to fit a third ring without getting a longer spindle?

After all my fiddling with my PX, I'm still on the fence w/ the bike. The riding experience (so far) is not what I had hoped.

Really hard to describe. I guess I compare it to my favorite rides, which right now are my 77 Romic, which was custom built for me... a much younger, fitter & lighter me... classic 73 degree road frame with Tange Champion tubing & my 89 Trek 660, a tighter criterium frame w/ True Temper team tubing. Both bikes feel right and mostly I don't think to much about them.... I just ride.

I just haven't had that same feel with the PX-10.... and it may be that I have to make more adjustments. I have changed out the stem and cranks and the Mafac Comp brakes. I'm not giving up on it yet. Its not the first time I've lusted after a certain bike, bought it, fixed it up and discovered it wasn't my "cup of tea"..... probably not the last.

Certainly more "hippie-dippy" rather than quantitative reasoning, I know.

I really like this refurbishment... but does anyone else think those handlebars are starting to sag?

If one is good...

I already have a PX10. Pretty sure it's a 1972, based on the plain lugs. Posted in this thread a while back I think. I don't need another one, but one showed up on my local CL for $85 and I couldn't resist. Somehow it lasted a couple of days before I picked it up. I'm pretty sure the seller Marks Up Tag Sale Bikes!!!!

Unlike my first one, this appears to have many of the original components. Front wheel doesn't match and I think the seatpost has been replaced. Panasonic saddle. Someone brush painted white over the original head tube lugs and seat stay tops.

I don't know what I'm going to do with it yet. I think the paint and chrome will clean up OK. Would be a fun project.

Anyway, here it is:

Ditto! Is it possible the lugs were originally white?
85 bucks?
I'd sleep under the car port for a week if that deal popped up in my hood.
Very cool.

Here's a question: are your headtube lugs brushed or sprayed? I'm working on re-finishing a '72/3 with plain lugs, and mine look to have been brushed.

Thanks guys. I guess checking CL 2-3 times per day eventually pays off. My wife doesn't pay much attention to individual bikes, so she didn't seem to notice when I brought this one through the kitchen and into the basement.

The head lugs and seat stay tops on this bike have definitely been painted white. Looks like some kind of thick paint slapped on with a brush. Maybe even latex (!!). I will try to remove it with solvents and keep the original black intact.

greg3rd48, I love that blue. Your bike looks great!

I couldn't help myself and have the bike almost completely torn down. Only thing left is the cranks and bottom bracket. I should have ponied up and bought a Stronglight crank puller when I got my first PX-10. Instead I had an LBS pull them for me. I didn't think I would ever need to pull Stronglights again, otherwise I would have loved the excuse to buy another tool.

Still not sure what I will do with it. Front Simplex derailleur needs help (broken mounting bracket, just like most of them). Other parts just need some cleaning and polishing to be usable, but not perfect. I like the fancy lugs compared to my other PX10 which has the plain lugs. I don't think this paint will clean up as well as my other one but I don't have the time to strip this down and repaint it right now. That doesn't stop me from thinking how cool it would be to paint this one in the blue color. I'll probably just polish it up and put it back together.
