Ad reads: "Classic Italian Frame/Fork - $225,
Late 1950's Vintage Legnano frame/fork 56 ctc (w campy drop outs) with a few other parts (bars/stem, seatpost, campy headset). This is one of the classics that has the bronze cast head tube badge. Picture shows complete bike, only f/f and parts listed above included. $225 OBO. This would make a great fixie or restoration build.

I have been in email contact twice with the seller, once about a year ago when he first listed it on CL and again yesterday. I am a few hours from the frame and I have asked both times for better pics. Each time he has responded that I need to see it in person.
You just don't see many Legnano's and it's my size, as bikes go I tend to thrive on the obscure and I think this would do fine.
He lists "campy drop outs" so I assume this is not a low end frame.

Should I pass or make a few hour drive? Talk me into or out of this frame/project.

Also I need another project like I need a hole in my head but this seems like it could be special. :twitchy:

$225.00 for just the frame and a few bits sounds high to me but I'm no expert.

And as much as I hate the constant "fork is bent" comments, I would have a good look at it because that first picture makes the fork look a bit odd.

My best deals come from adverts with terrible pictures.

ask him where the rest are the parts are too.

Make the trip! prettyshady makes a good point! Also if the seller has had it for a while, he might be willing to drop his asking price.

Top end early Legnano. I'd go for it... not a killer price, but not terrible.

You already know I'm not far from there, are you ever going to make it out here for a ride?

I agree on most of the things, if it has been listed for over a year he may be stuck on the price, but once you show up way up there in the Dells he may bite at $150.


Talk you out of a project? or buying another bike? I tried to stop a see a bike on my way to Atlanta this afternoon.

Good, Bad or Otherwise the Legnano is mine. It was not 1950's but a 1960's. Quick research and I think I have a 1961-62 Roma Olimpiade. SN FA9376. I am going with the Roma Olimpiade because there is nothing about the Gran Premio having Campy drop outs and fork ends and mine has both which the Roma Olimpiade should have.

Looks like a track stem. If it is an old Cinelli, you might recoup most of your investment by selling it. If it had a badge, you'd have a free frame.

The good news is that the bike blue, why is that a good news?? simple. Will be easier to find a similar blue than the darn legnano green. New cars are coming with a similar green but is not the same one obviously because are too metallic IMO. For the record you can paint that bike in silver and use a candy blue color, my best guess is that maybe with 2 coats you will get a very close original blue color. Doubt there is a base coat in that color, u have to ask but in candy can be done.

It was mine I would get the decals 1st, sandblast it, restore chroming, light grey primer, 2 coats of metallic silver sand finish it, candy blue, apply decals, 4 coats of clear, sand and polishing and let it in the garage for 2 weeks. Then put the bike together.

For the record u can get the decals, are available.

The other good news is that apparently u have a working seatpost binder, those legnanos are a pita when the binder is not working or lost.

Like your bike, reminds me my 1st racing bike, a legnano roma :D

My early 70's Gran Premio has Campy droouts and fork ends. If yours was a Gran Premio it should have a round sticker on the downtube near the top lug that says "Legnano Gran Premio".
