The completed headtube assembly probably went through the stamping machine upside down.

Yep; I'll bet that's exactly what happened. Since it's an electroforged frame, the head tube basically had stubs for the top tube and the down tube to be flash welded to. The stubs are at different angles to the head tube, but I can see how somebody with a hangover could put it in the stamping machine bass ackwards if he (or she) wasn't paying attention.

This is what electroforged head tubes look like before the top tube and down tube are flash welded to it, so it's pretty easy to see how the number could have been erroneously stamped on the top edge instead of the bottom edge. Still, it's an interesting oddity. I'm surprised the Schwinn paint shop or QC didn't catch it.

Does it add any value to the frame ? I was about to powder coat it for a cruiser restoration.
I wonder if it could be like an error minted coin ?
Thanks
Mike

I seriously doubt it adds any value to the frame, but who knows? I've been wrong before.

No additional value whatsoever. It might even lower the value due to the fact that its nonstandard.

I've seen a couple like that. There is a pretty nice Silver Mist Manta-Ray that comes up on eBay occasionally that has a S/N like that.

Nope, It's nothing like a stamp, or like you mentioned coin that requires it to be right side up to be "correct". So easy on the BIN price if you plan to sell it anytime soon....
