Paint Experts - Advice Sought

I have a custom painted frame. The previous owner did the work and supplied me with the spray cans (official GM paint) a few years back. Areas on the fork were chipping, so I decided to touch it up. I masked off the area, did some very light sanding then sprayed a newspaper first to gauge the spray pattern. Satisfied, I moved on to the fork. As I was spraying, the paint began coming out in globs and sputters. The can had very little paint left, plus it was old and the weather was chilly, so I figured all these combos yielded the unstable and embarrassing results.

Now I have a blemished fork and I don't know what to do about it. The good news is, the color matches.

I was hoping I could take some rubbing compound to it and smooth it out, but I have a feeling I'll be told to 1) buy new paint 2) sand it down 3) re-spray.

Before I do, I would like to get the wisdom of the group before I proceeded.

If you know the paint code, go to any decent paint shop and they will put some in a spray can for you.

Sand the area down feathering to good paint...primer/filler...spray...sand with 1200 onto good piant...clear all...sand with 2000...polish.

Thanks, Buldogge. What grit would you start with to get to good paint? Also, I'm hoping I can do all of this without removing the fork but I'm open to suggestions.

600 should be a good enough start...Use wet/dry (black) sandpaper.

I would pull the fork...but...if you pull the wheel and put the bike in a stand you should be OK...clean everything well...use alcohol or prepsol to clean before adding any coating.
