How to remove and polish black anodizing?

Hi, not sure if this is the forum to post this question so I will just gubernatorial it a try...

I know how to remove and polish through clear anodizing (sand course to fine then aluminum polish) but what about newer parts that come black?

Will they Polish up the same??

If so should I tape off and stay away from the clamp area (I don't want to affect the clamp diameter by sanding... Is this sonething to worry about?)

Here's a pic of the handle bar in question. I want to buy another for my other bike because they sell them for $25 in the 26mm diameter so I can use them with a cinelli XA stem.

I would smply get a different bar. I get a nice Nitto bar for around $40 from Milwaukee Cycles and I think there is more than $15 in aggrivation in removing the black stuff. Plus I suspect the finish of the metal is much rougher than clear anodized parts.

Nice Bianchi, well what we can see of it. I am on the lookout for one in that color.

Hi, thanks!

Well up here in Canada we can't get those deals due to duties and import taxes.. If I ordered that bar I would have to pay an additional $40-60 in brokerage fees as well as an additional 13% in duty...

The only website in the USA (that I know of) that ships to Canada using a special method that avoids this fee is jenson USA and I don't think they have and 26mm bars

I can buy that black one in any size at a store 10 min from my house

There is so little of the bar black showing with the tape on on the bar I wouldn't even worry about it. Roger

I have lots of good quality handlebars for sale, if you are interested. From the late fifties to the late eighties. And I live in Canada, so no worries about brokers, or duties or much else other that the cost to ship domestically.

Remove bar...spray with heavy duty oven cleaner (I would just do the center section)...rinse with water...polish...re-install bar.

Black stem, black bar doesn't make much difference, but the EZ Off idea is the quickest, just the part that shows.

these modern black components are often painted or powder-coated rather than anodized. I'd try some paint remover first (Orange or 3M strippers are less dangerous to your health and skin) before going to the lye (whether oven cleaner or Red Devil, and that stuff is really dangerous, but effective).

Thanks! Yea, I will try a little paint stripper as I have a large jug I use for stripping frames... It is probably powdercoated like you said...

Thanks!

After I strip the finish, I buff the piece with 0000 steel wool & WD40. Then polish with Mothers Mag & Aluminun polish. Then I finish with Eagle One Nano Wheel polish. It's xtra fine and a wax, all in one!
