I've been very pleased with the VO Grand Cru headsets I've installed. Sealed bearing headsets rule. They sell the appropriate spacers to match the finish of your headset.

How tall? You do mean the stack height right? I think the late '80s Campi HS were some of the tallest ever made.

The seller of this one says it has a 43mm stack height

+1 here. These are 41mm w/o any spacers. I was going to use one I bought on a new frame, but 39 was the max it could go. These are very light and very, very smooth. Excellent value, to boot.

I suspect RFC's problem is slight lack of threads on the steerer.
