source for campy SR dustcaps?

My campagnolo super record cranks have naked bolts. I've been thinking about getting some dustcaps for a while. That got me thinking, why are they so expensive? Does anyone have a line on some for a decent price? Alternatively, any ideas of affordable non-campy options?

roadrunner2012 05-07-12 08:12 PM

Eddy didn't use dust caps.

If you want some, I got them, not cheap.

Drillium Dude 05-07-12 08:21 PM

Why are they so expensive? Supply and demand - you want them and there are only so many pairs out there. Think of all the dustcaps out there on the roadways all over the world, forlornly rusting away after they finally unscrewed themselves after hundreds of miles of crappy roads. If only we'd checked them for tightness before every ride, huh?

I lost a few along the way myself. One was even a Campy 50th Anniversary dustcap; ouch!

They are a standard size. Any brand will fit. You could even convert to self-extracting. There are no SR dustcaps, just Record.

Some Campy cranks used a cap/bolt combination that looked like a self extracting unit but wasn't. If your looking for Campagnolo branded parts they'll work but wont break the bank.

You don't need any. They "weigh too much" anyways.... :roflmao2:

these should work;

Well that is kind of correct. There was the Brev and the patent. At the end when Campagnolo made Super Record cranks without arm fluting and laser etched logos and the extra machined beef at the big stress riser points.. there was a final design of the Dustcap, it was flat, no slight convex shape. I would have to go to work to advise on what was stamped in them.

One of the two is a bit concerning, the allen key port is marginal.

Given what we learned about your feelings on seller disclosure and buyer beware in Whatwolf's Mercx thread, I highly advise the OP to get a LOT of good clear pictures from you if he's even considering buying anything from you.

I have some I'd sell. I have very little Campy anymore.

Don't worry, his dustcaps look beautiful...

...and they're rounded out beyond belief.

I keep my dustcaps in jars. Every so often I put a few on ebay and am surprised at what people are willing to pay for them.
Looks like $10 for an ok set, $15 for a good set

rootboy 05-09-12 09:59 AM

We removed them way back when, and they usually got lost...because we were told, and drank the K'aid, that they were nothing but moisture traps. True, if neglected. Speaking of spendy dust caps, how 'bout the steel ones for older Record pedals? Yikes. At what those are going for, if you can find them, I'm tempted to store mine in jars.

I can remember fitting the cranks, leaving the dust caps in the box and throwing the box and caps in the bin. 'Pro riders don't use dust-caps!' Yeek! Makes me weep to think about it now. The Campagnolo boxes alone now sell for stupid money.

About 2 months ago, an Ebayer was selling steel pairs for $40 BIN. I snapped up one pair and haven't seen any since.

If your super cheap you can often get 7/8th inch push in dust caps or plugs at many Ace hardware stores that work with the majority of cranks for a couple of dollars a piece in black. I have done this on several cheap flipper builds.

My wife sold some just like these last week on ebay. They went for $12.50 plus a couple for shipping. The allen key holes were almost identical to these-they're pretty delicate.
