I skimmed the thread, but didn't see any mention of Thomson. Thomson X2s are the absolute best for me.

As for headsets, I prefer Chris King. Functionally, they are the same as any FSA or CC cartridge headset, but it certainly has bling factor. I've never heard anyone call the fugly...

I really like that X2 and the elite was quite nice as well. The 3ttt was also a terrific choice. Plenty of good options here at reasonable numbers.

El guicho - if that had a faceplate it would be game over.

EDIT - Thomson X2 is only 1 and 1/8th. I'd prefer not running a shim.

I'd have to say a Cinelli Grammo is quite easy on the eye. Yes it doesn't have a face plate but gives a nice clean look without having the bulky look most threadless stems have. I just sold my 1" threadless Grammo stem just a few weeks ago. If I didn't like my 3T Ergosum bars and they came in a 26mm diameter clamp area I would of kept it. My custom 650 frame uses a 1" threadless fork.

Ah sorry, I must have missed that criteria! I saw some people throw out the VO tallstack, which isn't for 1" steerers and was astounded that no one suggested the X2.

It's a great suggestion, and the Ritchey Classic apparently doesn't come 1 inch either.

I always thought the Cinelli Frog stem had possibilities if the big C would make a threadless version. AFAIK it's only ever been a quill stem, and there are better looking quills than that...but I like the 3-bolt faceplate.

roadrunner2012 05-21-12 08:58 PM

Stem has to fit the bike, not the other way around. There are 100's of choices.

If I were to buy a high zoot cross bike, it would be smaller than my road bike, even if it was plain.

The Salsa SULs were one of the nicest looking stems for older bikes IMHO because they match the narrower tubing nicely. Unfortunately Salsa quit making them after several recalls. You can still find them on eBay but I would be concerned about safety issues. They have a removable face cap too.

Why thanks for your astute, erudite and unsolicited opinion. Apparently you know nothing about modern MTBs and compact geometry.
unsolicited? come on... if i post a photo and a viewer takes a moment to share some criticism, i wouldn't necessarily assume it as unsolicited. somewhat erudite? yeah, maybe. but last i checked, this is the c&v forum, and this response might be expected, right.?

I find the face plates unattractive, but I love the advantage.
help me out with this, as i don't see the advantage. i'd need an extra set of levers at the least, right? and hope the brake cable was long enough the next time i were to install the same bars? or would this be an advantage only for a track applications?

least ugly croc

Unicorn.
i stand corrected! i'm converting to threadless!

Everyone seems so sensitive in this thread, is it because of the solar eclipse?
i'm not gonna blame the stars, excet those playing for the clippers. they got swept! arrgh!

I never mentioned what this was going on, or that it was a high zoot cyclocross bike. Only a couple of people knew that.

I'm innocent! :)

I've been wrapping handlebars and changing brake cables/housings all night.

Screwed up the tape a bit, but I couldn't care.

...and trying to get some crappy ancient Matrix tires off of Matrix rims.

The Deda Tres RC Corsas went on like buttah though.

PS Aaron, I was at the shop tonight looking at some possibilities for you.

Time is not right yet to divulge trick stem/bar combos.

...or at least what they race with on their team bicycles.

LOL - I trust you to let me know at the right time. When are you having yours painted?

Is this the only forum you post on with this name?

When he gets good, darn, and ready I was told.

I won't ask again. :)

Worth the wait though.

Probably have it together by mid-winter at this rate.

I'll show her off when she's presentable.

I almost bought a Gazelle cross frame last week on ebay to get me by.

Dilly dallied too long. Have a line on a beat Pinarello cross frame to get me through this summer.

No bad dents. :)

Why is the removable face plate a deal breaker? You know how to setup a bike to fit you by now, right?

I do - but I also tinker sometimes. I guess it's really not as big an advantage as it is in my head.

ColonelJLloyd 05-22-12 08:15 AM

Buy the best looking stem in your budget. If it don't got a removable plate it don't got a removable plate. ;)

If you like the mutant, the Origin 8 Classic Pro may be right up your alley. Here's a picture of it on my Peugeot PX-8.

im familiar with compact geometry. and while it'e true i don't like compact geo, thats not the problem.

the problem is that your frame is too small for you.

and you solicit my and everyone else's opinion when you post something.

just like how you said you thought nitto was "contrived and affected," you were expressing your opinion.
