1973 Schwinn Paramount with a stuck Bottom Bracket.......

I got this frame set from Fender1, who got it from Kurt, who got it from ...I don't know. But anyway, I've been reading that the fixed cup would not move no matter what, for any of the previous owners. So....I got the frame out of the box, put it on my Park stand, got my trusty Magic Schwinn BB tool with Support... I have to say it took longer to set up the tool than if was to remove it. Maybe, 15 seconds. The threads look fine, the shell could use a bit of facing. All is good now, next week it off to the painters.

I wonder how many PO's looked at it and assumed English, and were going in the wrong direction?

It also amazes me how many 'experts' here pound with a hammer instead of using leverage.

Nice job, in any case.

I believe he's looking at the thread size on the fixed cup.

It isn't English; it was tapped to Italian at some point in its life.

I knew it was Italian Thread, someone had retapped it to Italian Threading. That's no big deal. I would rather have good Italian threading, than no threading at all. It didn't even have Loctite. I was ready to use my heat gun if it did. The frameset is going to get painted in "Flamboyant red", I have a complete Super Record group, with Large Flange record hubs on 700c Clincher rims. Brown Brooks Ti Saddle......you guys get the picture.

I have eyes. I use them. Then I use my brain to formulate a reasonable response.

This frame has been around the block, more than once. It has been discussed ad nauseam.

Well It's going to stay on this block. I would really like to have the frequent flier miles this frame has accumulated. It really is in nice shape.

I've restored worse. This is my 1979 Schwinn Le Tour "Money Pit"

And your point is?? Nobody's got a gun to your head making you use your eyes and head until you get sick to your stomach.

FYI, Mike - I still suggest that the stripped state of this frame provides an excellent opportunity to have Mike Terraferma braze in a reinforcement sleeve into the Nervex lug's binder area before paint.

J.P. Weigle posted photos of the process on Flickr, if I recall right. It's worth it, especially when dealing with the lousy ears of the Nervex lug.

EDIT: Found a photo showing the completed work:

The Schwinn tool is functionally no different than the Park HCW-3 or HCW-4. Mike simply fitted that large disk on the outside (with a bolt through the BB cup) to keep the tool from flying off the flats of the fixed cup.

A huge fender washer with the proper diameter hole would do the same job as the disk.

The Schwinn Tool is a bit thicker and seems to fit Campagnolo Fixed cup a bit better than the Park Tool.

Yeah, appears there are a bunch of guys in this thread with their "magic tools" in their hands.

Careful not to get any on those BB threads, or you'll really get it stuck.

This is probably naive but, isn't a hefty bench vice mounted to a good solid bench a good tool for this problem? Or, is there too much danger of tweaking frame tubes if the frame is used as a "wrench". Probably so.
