It looks like a project that should provide some challenges. I believe, though, that if I could pull off the Hercules Kestrel, surely you should be able to bring this one around. ;)
Thanks :) DD |

Should be a little safer to do so now that the cars are off it after last weekend's festivities :)

As I await arrival of the frameset, I have begun the process of deciding what parts will be mounted when she's wearing her new clothes.
First off, these beauties were part of a great deal with 4rings6stars. Early-version Super Record brake levers with some funky millings at the cable anchor barrel: http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8165/7...3d53e8a8_b.jpg This milled crankarm (1978, but I can fix that) arrived from an Ebay seller today: http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7080/7...5af8d131_b.jpg And these were also included with the crankarm - as a bonus gift; they were not part of the auction: http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7219/7...05701e3d_b.jpg Pretty nice of the seller, huh? I'd also bought a very nice pair of Campy Superleggeri pista pedals from him - they arrived yesterday. I guess repeat customers get special treatment! Anyhow, I will tidy up the millings on my own, but they're pretty much good to go already. I have a pair of Nuovo Record pedals on the way, too. Cost outlay so far (without revealing the cost of the frame): Crankarm - $40 Nuovo Record pedals - $60 Oops. I won't reveal the cost of anything I get from a BF member. Ebay is fine because the sellers remain anonymous, but I would not want to discuss monies transferred between members. That's just the way I do business :) More updates as new info/parts come in. DD |
I hope this one keeps you busy and happy for a while, DD. I've got a soft spot for a sad story too -- it's not too hard to paint at home.
If you want to know more about the frame, I'd recommend other methods of paint removal before getting it sandblasted. I stripped mine chemically and it was a hoot to see that someone had previously stick-on-labelled it "ROSEBUD" down the seat tube. You'd maximize your chances of finding a tubing manufacturer stamp, too. |

I have had a generous offer from a BF member up here in WA for a free (or almost free) blast, but I think I will pass on that for a chemical strip. I will need to do some C&V-surfing this weekend for some painting/paint-removal threads. DD |
Just received in the mail today, $66 (including shipping) Nuovo Record pedals:

This has to be my find of the year so far :) DD |

Nah, not me - I can't see myself going with anything I wouldn't feel comfortable riding. In that vein, I sold off all my Campy 50th Anniversary stuff over 4 years ago. How's that Colner looking? DD

Never forget to ask if they have any old bike parts laying about. :) Building a Nuovo Record gruppo for my "next" something. |

I've heard tell of the "got any bike parts?" approach to garage sale etiquette. I may have to do a little checking around the neighborhood myself this weekend. I still need a couple little bits and pieces. DD |
Good stuff, DD. I vote yellow! I get more compliments on my yellow bike that any other color, ymmv ;)
|
^ I get this - I had one yellow bike once. It was admittedly quite a head-turner.
Once I get the frame in hand, I think I'll be sold. Seller says it's a metallic-sparkle type of yellow, which sounds very interesting to me. The trick will be whether or not I can duplicate it. I suppose a gold or silver base coat with a clear yellow might do the trick. I'll definitely need some feedback/advice from the DIY painters on this thread and I hope some of them will share their see-cruds with me :) DD |
Yeah you can do a candy style paint job with a metallic base and colored clear, or do a color base and pearl (my bike has yellow paint with yellow pearl). Either way can look good and it makes the paint job pop more than just a solid color.

Thanks to 23skidoo for contacting me and providing the required Campy top tube brake cable clips.
You rock, Richard :) DD |
Frameset arrived today - thanks lowlife1975!
A couple things I noticed right away: 1. Bulge on the top tube is not too bad, or at least not any worse than the one that was on my Super before restoration and that came out great - and nothing negative could be discerned from the saddle, either. So that's good news. 2. It appears that besides the brake coming around and chipping the paint from a long-ago spill, it left a small dent and might also have pushed in the gear lever braze-on as well. The braze-ons are set very high up on the downtube, so it's completely conceivable that the driveside one took a knock. I will have the old one removed and a new one brazed in place (Guerciotti didn't get them perfectly placed in relation to one another anyway) and probably fill in the small dent. 3. I'm pretty sure this is a Columbus SL frame. The remnants of the seat tube decal have red (under some ancient masking tape), sure look to be the funky "Columbus" font and there is some very tiny remains of lettering that reads "ciale". As any purveyor of Columbus-piped stuff knows, most of their tubing decals proclaim "Acciaio Speciale" on either side of the classic dove. No Columbus stamping on the fork steerer tube (stamped "58"), but the bottom is rifled. Interestingly, the rifling is not flat but has a rounded surface to the spirals. I will take detailed photos tomorrow and post them up starting tomorrow evening. She's led a hard life, but really - I don't think it will be overly difficult to transform her from a Guerci-nottie to Guerci-hottie :) DD |
"Guerci-hottie" - LOL. Can't wait to see more. I'm sure you've seen the group of photographed parts that recently popped up on the 'Bay, right?

Yeah, I'll drill a few holes here and there, but that will be the extent of the bling. DD |

I have - but I have to forget about all that stuff! One, Guerciotti-panto stuff always goes through the roof, and two, I am going to do this this particular one a little low-key.

Ever thought about getting a pantograph yourself and go to town? the basic, manual things for scribing lines run about 20$, used....

As promised, here are the pics of "Ugly Duckling" (thanks for the naming convention, rootboy). She's got some ways to go, but there's a diamond under all that rough.

Here are a few more.

DD |
That is most certainly a Columbus decal.
Subscribed, I'm excited to watch this progress. |
Always interested to see a rescued diamond in the rough. I can't wait to see how this turns out because it is one I would have passed up as too far gone -or at least too far beyond my skill set. :P
