Got a new project on the way :)

It's yellow :)

Ever since a very recent, nearly-completed De Rosa deal fell through, I've been keeping my eye out for something. And what do you know, I found something tonight. Yay!

This will be the biggest project ever; to be blunt, it needs work! What the hey, I enjoy a challenge.

Pics in a few days when it arrives. Watch this space!

Sad to hear the De Rosa deal fell through, as you would love one, I just know it.

A true rider's bicycle, all through their line up.

Also can't wait to see what you have up your sleeve!

Drillium Dude 06-13-12 03:09 PM

Grady: yes, the De Rosa would've been a good deal, but I wanted to ride it for some time before doing a restoration on it. Until we discoverd a small bump on the underside of the downtube aft of the head lug...

Would've made it difficult to give an objective ride-report :)

As for the new project, well, it will be a challenge to bring it back from where it's at right now. I'll post up a couple teaser pics tonight (the new format will not allow for photo uploads from my work computer).

It's hard for me to picture Jeff on anything other than some pretty Italian steed.. Mind you, he sold his swiss :P

gomango 06-13-12 04:09 PM

I wouldn't be surprised if he rolls out a Paramount one of these days.

BTW Jeff, we are off to the Nature Valley Grand Prix criterium tonight.

Time trials were this morning!

Drillium Dude 06-13-12 04:19 PM

It's Italian, all right. Pinarellos have never done much for me (except for the Spumoni version, but that would still be behind a number of other makes), to be honest.

As for year, well, I'm glad I started this thread early and have some interest - I'll need it to get a ballbpark on the year. This frame has some interesting features that make dating it a challenge for me (and the PO).

Oh, and I write "yellow" with a fat tongue in my cheek. You'll all see why soon enough ;)

DD

Italuminium 06-13-12 04:32 PM

yellow... yellow... Yellow communist bastards? Colnago CCCP edition?? That would be awesome :P

Chombi 06-13-12 04:44 PM

Gosh, could be anything then if it's not a yellow Rello......Could it be a "yellowish" colored Masi 3V Volumetrica?? Iv'e seen a lot of yellows on Galmozzis too.....

whatwolf 06-13-12 04:53 PM

I hope it's not really yellow because it's actually gold-plated.

Chromovelato? That would be nice.... Maybe some Masi "Champagne" - that could be classified as yellow?

lowlife1975 06-13-12 04:58 PM

man, speculation is running rampant here. wish i could say some of ya'll are hot, warm or cold. but the guessing game is too good.

WNG 06-13-12 05:54 PM

A Benotto in Chromovelato 'gold'? :popcorn

:thumb:I'm gonna go ahead and sub this thread. DD, your build threads have inspired me to make mine more detail oriented with lots of pics. I look forward to seeing this one through.

Teaser pics. So much for keeping the maker a secret since anyone looking at the URL will be able to ID the frame. So, without further ado, these will at least show what's ahead of me:

There's rust, but I also think some of that rust-color may be the primer - it looks suspiciously like that old-school rust-red primer I've seen lurking below the surface of a number of Italian frames' paint from the 70s and early 80s.

OTOH, it could end up like the seatstays on shnibop's Colnago Super ;)

For the money, I figured I could roll the dice. What the hell, right?

Anybody care to take a stab at a year? Personally, I find it interesting that the stay caps are fluted and plain. I've only seen Guerciottis with plain flat caps - or fluted and engraved. Braze-on gear lever bosses, but no brake cable bosses. Top of BB shell gear cable guides and what looks to be fairly-nicely-finished BB shell; I've seen some horrendously-finished Guerc BB shells.

This is going to be fun!

I'm surprised it has the remnants of a Columbus tubing sticker. Between the blank spoon stays and flat crown with no engraving, I would have guessed this to be one of the bottom-of-the-barrel Guerciottis with Falk tubing; Gran Sport components at best.

Also odd is that the rear dropouts (not the ends, just the dropouts) are not chromed to match the front dropout treatment. If the TSD catalog from this era is of proper indication, the production bikes from this era were finished as such.

I don't know, DD - I'd suggest you build this thing up and ride it before putting any effort into it. I know you can make it look beautiful, but I'm not sure it's a frame worthy of special effort.

Personally, I can't see anything that honestly suggests that the tubing decal is a Columbus decal.

What would a Falk decal look like? I'm unfamiliar with that tubing, except that I know some Merckxs were made with it.

I thought I saw that flattened "U" in the decal, but I'm starting to think it's an "A".

A Falk (technically Falck; it's misspelled in the TSD/Gooch catalog) tubing decal looks as follows:

Could be one too - check and see if the decal ghosting matches in shape.

You may be right about some of that "rust" being primer. The SLX Gooch I had showed a rust colored primer in places.

Thanks - I'll check that out closely once the frame is in my hands. Probably early next week.

So, what's the toke on Falck tubing? What kind of comparison to SL or 531?

T-Mar made some comments on it ages ago - Googling the forum should bring up the results. Not much said about it though.

Just a pretty frame right now but it looks great as project bike.

Campagnerdo 06-13-12 07:52 PM

Is that a slight bend in the top tube?
