Rene Herse Demontable Pics

12 Attachment(s)
I started a thread on the Classic and Vintage valuation forum and there was some interest in seeing more pictures, so here they are. My Father-in-Law bought this bike from the original owner just after the 84 Olympics, and a little later gave it to me as the frame was too big for him.

I have the original paperwork. Here is the invoice.
http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=256626

At the exchange rate in 1972, that was $538.40. Customs was about $25.00.

And here is a draft letter hand written by (I presume) Rene Herse.

Hope this is of some interest,
Mike

Interest!! I'd say this is the post of the weekend.

unterhausen 06-17-12 01:02 PM

wonderful. I see now why you'd want to mess with the chrome, but I still say let it go. Collectors will see right past that.

What size tubing is that rear rack made out of?

elboGreaze 06-17-12 01:06 PM

Man, that is one flippin' awesome bike, and it's neat that you have some paperwork. Can't wait to see what that brings at auction.

puchfinnland 06-17-12 01:12 PM

wonderful bike.
please show us it dismounted???

ericbaker 06-17-12 01:16 PM

!!!!!!!!!

threecarjam 06-17-12 01:16 PM

Holy crap, that thing is ridiculous.

And puchfinnland - QR is to take the frame apart, it comes apart in two pieces for easier transportation.

Bianchigirll 06-17-12 01:17 PM

What a great looking machine!! I can't believe the details and extras on this. The small braze on tabs for the from rack, the generator mount and even a pumppeg! What is the quickrelease on the toptube for or is there one on the downtube also making this a folder? that would explain the odd positioning (atleast to me) of the shifters.

Vertical dropouts, was that radical back in the early '70s?

OH I missed it first time through there is a quickrelease on the downtube. I wonder if I could sell my van for enough to buy this....

Beautiful crankset too

AltBrewer thanks for posting such great pics. I do not know much about this brand but from what little I have learned from this forum I agree with the others, as this is sitting the sky could be the limit on value.

northbend 06-17-12 01:27 PM

you have a heirloom quality bicycle there

Absolutely stunning. The very definition of BLING!

AZORCH 06-17-12 01:43 PM

Oh man oh man oh man oh man!!!!

I hope you treated your father-in-law right! That is one heck of a gift... and I am forever in envy of you. (In 1984, my father-in-law gave me a Buick station wagon that managed to make it down the block before coughing up a rod.) Seriously, that is a nice bike and is the holy grail for many of us - me, especially. Enjoy the crap out it!

AZORCH 06-17-12 01:44 PM

And crud... it looks like it might be my size....

IthaDan 06-17-12 03:00 PM

Wow.

rootboy 06-17-12 03:25 PM

A work of art. Thanks for showing us. look at where those shifters are mounted. Pure genius.

jet sanchEz 06-17-12 04:33 PM

Nice. Perhaps a forumite can translate the paperwork? Do you have a larger copy of the handwritten note? This is a rare bird you have here, good luck with the sale.

rootboy 06-17-12 04:44 PM

Sale? Did he mention he was going to sell it?

I believe he intends to sell it as he first posted in the Evaluation forum.

rootboy 06-17-12 04:53 PM

Ah. Thanks.

demontable means you can take it apart. HERE is a page that shows it being démonté

Working on a translation now. It appears that mr. Herse states the delivery date and some details on the packaging size/abilities of this demontable frame. Awesome stuff. Who wants to trade my kidney for this bike?

Thanks. I was going to take more pics, but this saves the trouble.

I think the attached is a typed page of the draft letter, as it has the same date, but there are some differences between the handwritten note and the typing. Yes, I am planning to sell it, but haven't decided yet on the venue. I am a bit leery of eBay, and am not really worried about getting top dollar for it, although I did turn down an offer of $1000 last year.

I will never have as much cool in my whole collection as can be found in the stem of this bike.
