Rene Herse Demontable Pics

I started a thread on the Classic and Vintage valuation forum and there was some interest in seeing more pictures, so here they are. My Father-in-Law bought this bike from the original owner just after the 84 Olympics, and a little later gave it to me as the frame was too big for him.

The Bike

Details

I have the original paperwork. Here is the invoice.

At the exchange rate in 1972, that was $538.40. Customs was about $25.00.

And here is a draft letter hand written by (I presume) Rene Herse.

Hope this is of some interest,
Mike

wonderful. I see now why you'd want to mess with the chrome, but I still say let it go. Collectors will see right past that.

What size tubing is that rear rack made out of?

Man, that is one flippin' awesome bike, and it's neat that you have some paperwork. Can't wait to see what that brings at auction.

Holy crap, that thing is ridiculous.

And puchfinnland - QR is to take the frame apart, it comes apart in two pieces for easier transportation.

Bikes: Too many to list here check my signature.

What a great looking machine!! I can't believe the details and extras on this. The small braze on tabs for the from rack, the generator mount and even a pumppeg! What is the quickrelease on the toptube for or is there one on the downtube also making this a folder? that would explain the odd positioning (atleast to me) of the shifters.

Vertical dropouts, was that radical back in the early '70s?

OH I missed it first time through there is a quickrelease on the downtube. I wonder if I could sell my van for enough to buy this....

Beautiful crankset too

AltBrewer thanks for posting such great pics. I do not know much about this brand but from what little I have learned from this forum I agree with the others, as this is sitting the sky could be the limit on value.

Oh man oh man oh man oh man!!!!

I hope you treated your father-in-law right! That is one heck of a gift... and I am forever in envy of you. (In 1984, my father-in-law gave me a Buick station wagon that managed to make it down the block before coughing up a rod.) Seriously, that is a nice bike and is the holy grail for many of us - me, especially. Enjoy the crap out it!

Nice. Perhaps a forumite can translate the paperwork? Do you have a larger copy of the handwritten note? This is a rare bird you have here, good luck with the sale.

Working on a translation now. It appears that mr. Herse states the delivery date and some details on the packaging size/abilities of this demontable frame. Awesome stuff. Who wants to trade my kidney for this bike?

Thanks. I was going to take more pics, but this saves the trouble.

I think the attached is a typed page of the draft letter, as it has the same date, but there are some differences between the handwritten note and the typing. Yes, I am planning to sell it, but haven't decided yet on the venue. I am a bit leery of eBay, and am not really worried about getting top dollar for it, although I did turn down an offer of $1000 last year.

Here is some more literature and correspondence

I will never have as much cool in my whole collection as can be found in the stem of this bike.
