Rivendell / David Lance Goines Poster

I know, another Rivendell thread...

Anybody else order one of these, sight unseen? They had a limited run produced and they're raising the price as they sell more. I ordered one earlier this week when they were $20 shipped, but it looks like they're up to $50 + shipping now.

https://www.rivbike.com/product-p/pr6.htm

I figured I'd roll the dice since I'm a sucker for nicely designed and printed posters (I have a lot of silk screened gig posters) and this artist's older posters look great, example (this is not the Rivendell poster):

Yea, I guess they weren't expecting to sell so many posters to sell so quickly. I think the price was supposed to just go up to $25+freight for a while.

From the Rivendell "Blug", late last night:

We have sold too many posters too cheap, so raised the price to make up for that and make the 200 or so we have left last. It's really the only way. This poster thing was--I guess still is-the most unpredictable, amazing luckout shock to us, ever. Thank you. I hope it doesn't turn sour. In an internet age, anything can happen and nothing is surprising.

The idea of an early adopter cheap price was to raise cash fast so we could make the balloon payment. At that point, all that mattered was fast cash. So these posters that cost us $15 plus time each, used a $2 box, took non-free labor to process, and a few bucks to mail. It is gratifying and fantastic that so many of you bought these posters without even seeing the image. Man, thanks a lot.

And please, you can't get mad at the new price. This is kind of the going rate for a David Lance Goines poster, anyway. Look 'em up. When we're down to 100 the price goes up again. This will no doubt make somebody mad, but when we're down to fifty, the price will go up againagain. We want the remaining 200 to last ten years. Five, at least. It's not like it's true advertising for us. You'll hang it in the hall, or bedroom or den. It's art, and only barest of barely commercial. It's art with faint commercial undertones. There's a brand on it; there. We are happy with how it came out, and had little to do with it.

Must have seen the movie "Wall Street" recently too, greed is good perhaps.

And Patrick Nagel is not around to do a girl on a Riv.

Shudder... In the 80s, we had a neighbor with a big flashy home who had a Nagel on the outside of his house. Very tasteful...

I'd be tempted to pick up one of these posters, Riv has always done cool design work. It would be hung on an inside wall of course.

Yea, I was also thinking of the old bridgestone posters that I'd seen before:

David Goines is a treasure. If it's well printed, it's worth the money.

His workshop & studio used to be literally across the street from Velo-Sport in Berkeley. I used to go watch him make lithographs through his window
when I was a young bike geek/art student.

I wish I had seen this earlier! Damn! Oh well, I bit the bullet and payed the new price because it's still worth it to me. Now I have to get a nice frame!

It seemed like I saw those Goines posters everywhere 30 years ago. Maybe that's because he was local.

Yes he is, and yes it is! Printing the way he does it a laborious art. We have two old Heidelberg presses where I work, a KS Cylinder press and a Heidelberg "windmill". Those presses are works of art on their own and thankfully the owner recognizes that. We still use them occasionally for die cutting, though a much newer Bobst has really cut into that.

I'm really excited to get this in my hands and look it over. This was a really cool idea by Rivendell, and still a good deal at the new price.

Seems a little silly not to show it, not to want to sell it. If it sells out, design a new one! Start a series!

Goines is a fabulous artist and he prints his work himself. A big influence on my early design work after I met him at his shop after stopping at Velo Sport in the 70s.

Got mine in the mail today. Not really what I was expecting and I kind of prefer the subject matter of the bridgestone posters from earlier in this thread, but it's still a nice print so I definitely don't feel bad about dropping $20 on it.

They're showing some images of it over on the rivendell blog now if anyone's interested.

Yeah... but on the other hand I think it's kind of fun. Radiohead did that when they released their "news paper" album. I like what Stanley Donwood did for them in the past and I bought it sight un-seen. The wait for the package was fun in a sort of, being a kid and it's almost Christmas, torture kind of way.

Yeah, but this is about who made it and how it was made.

It's a fascinating question to ask how many posters can be sold without showing what they look like, where the customer relies solely on the design reputation of the company. I bought one, expecting to like it, and my expectations were met.

Did everyone see that the posters have been marked down to $32.00? That means that everyone that paid 50, like me, will get an 18 dollar credit. So do I have to email and ask for that? That seems sort of embarrassing to do.

I bought the poster at the $20.00 price (shipping included)and have to say they basically gave it away. I really like the image and find that the artist certainly has a "style" that I dig. The poster came with a several page printed explanation of how it was made and the technique used to get to the finished poster. Rivendell has been revealing progressives on their "blug" that show what the main image is if you are curious.

I am, of course, a huge Rivendell fan so buying the poster was kind of a given for me. I hope they do more.

They will probably just put it in your store account. Check the "view gift certificate balance" next time you sign into buy something and I bet you see it there.
