Possible Classic Vintage Schwinn?
Hey guys, I had my bike upside down the other day as I was working on it and noticed a serial number imprinted on the frame located underneath the crank set. I bought this bike on Craigslist a while bike and knew it had been a restoration project, but never considered the possibility of it being a vintage or classic. I've researched the serial number and have had no luck finding out the year it was made. Anyway, It's a light blue 52cm road bike Schwinn. The imprinted numbers underneath the crank set are: G0485 and 9271676 imprinted underneath the first set of numbers. On the seat tube there is a sticker that says "Chromoly Main Tubes 4130" It looks like a newer sticker.. Not really sure that the frame is a chromoly though. If anyone knows the year of this frame based on the placing and arrangement of serial numbers than please share your input! I'd like to know what exactly I'm riding around on. Thanks!

Hi Lycia,
Is there a round head badge on it? Are there 4 digits stamped into it? The last two are the year of manufacture. Also, the G number could indicate a 1985 Giant (Taiwan) built frame. That number is usually on the right rear dropout though. Pictures would be nice.

Jerry, Thanks! No round head badge.. I got the 7 digit numbers wrong, it's hard reading upside down lol, they are actually 5271675. I took some pics of the bike and of the serial number here's the link to my flickr so you can check those out.https://www.flickr.com/photos/6653113...e6df46f6856c88

My guess? It's a Schwinn World Sport.
As Jerry said, it's a Taiwan (Giant) built frame, probably from the early '80's. Take a look through the catalogs on the TR Findley site to narrow it down.
It's not really a "classic". The World Sport was the bottom-of-the-line 10-speed from that time. Cool enough bike to ride, but nothing to shout "whoopee!" over and over about. Unless you like shouting "whoopee!", that is.

It looks like an '85 World Sport in Ice Blue: https://bikecatalogs.org/SCHWINN/1985...rld_Sport.html

Your frame was made by Giant (Taiwan) in April, 1985. The 1985 Le Tour, Traveler, and World Sport models all had 4130 chromoly double-butted main tubes. You should be able to tell which model by looking at the catalog photos and checking the specifications for the originally equipped components on each model.

EDIT - Definitely a World Sport; I didn't see the flickr link.

My bad didn't realize that was the head badge. I understood it was a World Sport, but I don't have much knowledge about Schwinns so I was just wondering the year it was built. Thanks though.

Those are nice-enough frames. I had an '86 that I liked quite a bit. I think it originally would have had stem shifters and turkey-wing brake levers, so your idea to go with a fixed gear conversion is a good one.

Nice 84-86 Shwinn World Sport done up fairly nicely as a SS. Great riding nice bike to get around with but not something with much classic or rare value. If you like the bike just ride it, these bikes make great SS get around bikes.

Zukahn1, it is a great bike. Needs some work and part replacement. I don't like the seat it came with or the rims. They seem to bend easily and the seat isn't practical for commuting. I bought it with the intent on putting some TLC into it, but I love the frame. Sturdy bike for sure. I get asked often what type of bike it is and the year and I never had a good answer besides it's a Schwinn World Sport. I don't rreally care for the value, just the practicality of commuting with it.
