Bianchi Trofeo.
 

Can any Bianchi experts comment on the bike below? I'm looking at purchasing but its out of town and haven't been able to look at it. I can't find the specs on a late 80's Trofeo. Hard to tell from the photo, but it looks like Super Record derailleurs, where these ever standard on this model? What crank is that?

Just an FYI, its in canada, and may be a canada specific model.

Just answered one of my own questions. randyjawa's site has a Trofeo that has Super Record derailleurs (hopefully he doesn't mind if I post the picture here). Still curious about the crank thought.. is it campy? chorus?

Crank looks to be a drilled-out Suntour or Shimano. I don't think Trofeo came out until late 80s, which would put it past the date of stock SR Campy derailleurs. The brakes look to be Modolo, correct?

Brakes are Modolo I believe. I'm seeing in a few posts referencing Trofeos from around 85, and I think SR was still available until 86 or 87, so there is a little overlap.

Are you looking at the crank in the second picture? That picture is for reference, and is not the bike I'm inquiring about. I'm interested in the bike in my first post.

I have never seen a Trofeo with anything resembling even Athena level as OEM, but they might be out there, perhaps the Trofeo was a higher end model in the 80's than the 90's.

The 90's models were lugged steel "retro" models, mostly with Italian tubing that was oval as it entered the BB. They had lower end Campy groups, and often a mix of Campy Avanti, Mirage and Miche or Ofmega components, plus Campy rims.

They're nice bikes, and the Miche/Campy wheelsets are light and pretty with ball bearing hubs.

I don't know if the 90's Trofeos were being "brought back" for some kind of retro marketing after the 80's models, or not.

I think this is a fairly accurate thought. In an earlier post, BianchiGirl posted the 85 catalog Trofeo, which had columbus tubing and Superbe Pro derailleurs. I think it must have been somewhere near the level of the Champion D'italia.

Another missed thread! you guys really need to keep this stuff on the front page. Jeff great looking Trofeo! I would love a Bianchi especially a '87 Volpe in that color.

Anyway your Trofeo is most likely an '87. You can tell because of the script model name the '86/87 World champ sticker. the Trofeo in those days was usually a few models above the CdI. Like the CdI usually carried a mix of Suntour drive and Italian cranks, brakes, hubs and other parts, although the '87 model was dressed up a bit with the SR drive since Vic/Tri and C-Rec were now being marketed as better. According to the catalog you cranks should be Ofmega SUper Champion.

If you havent taken them off yet use an abundance of caution, I stripped the extractor threads on my '88 Trofeo with an Ofmega crank. make sure the threads are really clean the extractor tool screwed all the way in. It wouldn't hurt to put some penetrating oil on and let it sit for a day either.

Thanks BG. Unfortunately I was second in line for this beauty and never got a chance. I think the first in line paid asking price, which was probably more than I wanted to spend anyway... Regardless, I'm learning. There are so many bianchi models that look similar, it's taking me some time to wrap my head around them all.
