I don't have an answer to your question but my experience with Serfas tires is awful. I bought some of their 700c road tires from Jenson USA awhile back as they looked good on paper (high thread count, low weight, widths I wanted, etc.) and were getting blown out (pardon the pun) for next to nothing. They rode great at first but literally began disintegrating after a few hundred miles - this was true for all six tires I bought. I don't remember what the model was but I sure as heck won't buy Serfas tires again. However, I have had one of their pumps for a few years and it's great.

Any pics you can share of the Touring Deluxe with the 38mm tires? I just picked up a clean 85 Touring Deluxe in my size.

27 x 1 1/4" were the most common size, back when 27" wheels were a standard in the US. There were narrower 27" tires (27 x 1 1/8" and 27 x 1"), but they were much less common. So almost any frame that was made for 27" wheels tires has frame clearance for 27 x 1 1/4" tires. As for suggestions, most of the 27" tires discussed in this thread are 27 x 1 1/4.

If you want wider tires. check the clearance between the chain stays before you buy the tires. It might not accommodate wider than 27 x 1 3/8". 27 x 1 3/8" tires existed, and many frames that were made for 27" wheels were made to accommodate 27 x 1 3/8 tires. But since 27" tires wider than 1 3/8" were almost nonexistent, there was little reason to built a frame with space for wider 27" tires.

I have a Maruishi TA18 that was sold with 27" tires. It's a touring bike, which one might expect to be made to accommodate wide tires. But it was designed for 27 x 1/4" tires, because that's what existed, and it won't fit tires any wider than 1 3/8" nominal width, and those only barely (depending on the model and the actual width). With 700C wheels, I have more choices of tires, but the limit is still the chainstay spacing. I can fit some 700C x 38mm tires, but only barely, with no more than 2 mm chainstay clearance on each side of the tire, and a chain tug to hold the axle perfectly aligned.

Beautiful Panasonic. Those 38s are exactly what I'm looking for. I think your bike is an 86. Mine is an 85. Bought it a couple of weeks ago-a hard to find 25" that fits me well. I would love to fit it w/ 700x38s. The work begins.

Yeah, Pasela's seem to be in short supply. I had a tough time finding 1 1/8". Sure, I could hit eBay and pay $50 per tire..

Tryin to find some 27x1 1/4 tan or white wall tires... i have given myself a headache. I really wish i was quicker on the draw for the 40$ pair of old Peugeot quick release wheels, looked brand new with brand new tan wall tires... i did not realise i not only missed a good deal, but i also missed the easiest and cheapest way to get ANY new or used tanwall tire in my size.

Id like to ask if Sunlite or Kenda are any good.. i was lookin at the Kenda because they're in the USA (closer than EU or China)

I bought a pair of very cheap Raleigh branded tyres from SJS a few weeks back for my Motobecane - not working at the moment so I'm reluctant to part with cash. They were £6.99 each; I thought if they only last six months they'll do. 300 miles on now, not a single puncture or tear, very little if any wear visible, and they look "right" on the bike. For the money I'm very pleased.

Very nice Moto. I've got the same color in a Grand Sprint. It came with a double but I put a triple on it for the San Francisco hills. Very nice bike, definitely a keeper. And a bonus, my son likes it too, and rides it regularly, which helps justify keeping it in the fleet.

And now, could someone please tell me where to find decent affordable 27x1 1/4 tires for a flipper. Don't want to spent $50/pair for a bike I can only sell for maybe $100 on a good day. Found some Vittoria's on sale at biketiresdirect on sale last month, $16/each, but the choices and availability (and prices!) of 27" tires now is abysmal. Earlier in the year, Walmart had Bell Air Guards for $10. Now they're $22.33. I bought four for flippers (and liked them!). Wish I had bought a truckload!

I am in the very rare position of having more good 27" wheelsets than 27" tires.

Have look on Deporvillage - they've got Conti Ultrasport III's in that size in stock at £11.57 (about $14 USD I think?). Not sure how much postage to the USA would be, but it's very reasonable (I think it was about £8 last time I ordered) to the UK. Just one thing to note about these tyres - they're very generously proportioned, about the largest 27 x 1-1/4 I've ever fitted.

This past year marks a first for me. I've purchased more 27" tires than 700c(three pairs vs one, respectively). The 27s are Paselas, weren't as easy to find as I would have thought. Prices are more expensive than several years ago(from what I remember). I paid $28-30 per tire.

Regardless, they've proven to be a good tire so far.sot would be nice to see more decent quality 27" tires with a tan sidewall...

Looking at the page 4 months later, I'm seeing the 27" Pasela options only crossed out in all-black form. (The website apparently only lets you choose between "amber" and "black" for tire sizes that they have in stock.) From my past inquiries about the 26"x1.75" size, Panaracer is surprisingly open about which tires are currently being made, or are between production runs. So it would be nice if being crossed out merely meant they are between runs.

The fact that 24"x1" isn't listed in the spec chart on those pages makes me wonder if its days are numbered, though...

Coincidentally, I picked up a used pair of Ultrasports this week and mounted them. They are, by far, the biggest honking 27 x 1 1/4 tires I have ever seen. I'll definitely buy more.

I pulled one off a bike I was flipping recently. Very impressed, and this is the type of thread I like for my around town bikes, especially when I ride over hardpack. Very similar to my favorite Schwalbe Marathon, at a lower price.

The limited selection of slightly more aggressive tires is quite frustrating, are the Kenda/Sunlite hybrid tires worth $25 each? I read reviews on amazon about people buying them for much less as well as some saying they are not very durable, so I am somewhat concerned they are expensive just due to limited availability, not quality.

The Kenda hybrid-tread 27" tires are very "basic" in quality, both in terms of threads-per-inch and also in terms of the consistency of the overlap width of the left and right outer sidewall plies. They are cheap tires, but I found that they performed surprisingly well on the street and on dirt trails around here.
My rear tire blew out in the center of the tread, I believe because of irregular/insufficient overlap between the outer plies, this after a couple of months of pretty rough use in rocky terrain. This was at least eight years ago btw, when they sold for $17.
