Slicks. But nobody currently makes a folding lightweight slick. It would be interesting to compare a folding Pasela with a Gatorskin.

The only tires that are available in 27" sizes and having been tested for rolling resistance would be the Continental Ultrasport and Ultrasport III, although versions of the Vittoria Zaffiro that were also tested might be similar to the 27" version of the Zaffiro.

The Continentals tested well, actually as good as some of the higher-level racing tires from other brands.
The tested 700c Zaffiro was not far behind in terms of rolling resistance.

I've ridden on the 27x1" Pasela tires, which measure a full 26mm wide on my touring rims, and these seem to ride and perform well, but I probably couldn't notice a couple of watts difference (per tire).

The better-performing tires reportedly don't suffer as much additional rolling resistance incurred by lowering the pressure by any increment of pressure.
At higher pressures, different tires may perform more similarly, unless the tread is deep which would intensify the flexing of the rubber tread (and incur energy losses).

Not sure if this is new to any of you, but Swift Tire once again has the tan wall 27X1 3/8 tires in stock. Price is up to $36 which is more than I recall them being but I could be wrong.

That sounded like what I recall meaning that red label rims were 700c and blue label rims were 27", but perhaps depending on brand (such as Super Champion and Araya)?

Just stumbled on some purported 27x1-3/8" tires on Nashbar:

I know nothing about them, but they might be worth a look if you want a wider 27-inch tire.

Vintage Rigida rims used a red label for 700C and a blue label for 27" but this was not standardized across the industry.

Those look like re-badged (or possibly reverse-engineered?) Kenda Kross Cyclo tires.

As such, expect an actual inflated width of about 29-30mm on vintage touring rims.

I found this style of tire to work surprisingly well both on- and off-road.

Mine (Kendas) took some off-road abuse, but I'm not surprised that I had a rear casing failure under the tread, being that they were very cheaply-made tires.

The price is right if shipping is reasonable.

Recently I bought a pair of CST 27" x 1 3/8" (37-630) blackwall tires for a future project. The looked larger than the ordinary 27 x 1 1/4" like Kendas and such. I mounted one up today on a NOS replaclement 27" wheel. The steel rim measured 25mm outside 17mm inside.
Inflated to 70psi (max 85psi) the max width was 35mm with an aspect (height of ~30mm. As a reference a mounted Pasela 37-622 measured 36mm.
It will likely be easier to sell these older bikes with wider tires. Only $24.99CAD (after inflation, pun intended!) A mid seventies Peugeot tourer will get them for sure.

Thanks for the tip (and to dddd as well, seems I can't quote both). I bought a pair from 365cycles on ebay that worked out to $41.50 taxed and shipped, which is cheaper than Nashbar. They are indeed embossed Kenda, Made in Taiwan. Max. width on Weinmann 1-1/4 rims is barely 32mm.

That's a great choice, possibly the widest 27" tire available(?).

Tread looks like a copy of the 700x41c "Nimbus" hybrid tires that came stock on my 1991 Specialized Crossroads.
Should help to give an older bike an updated look, while making any 27"-wheel bike more versatile!

I would probably run those tires at a modest 55psi for my 140# rider weight.

Now to see what those tires cost state-side...

EDITED: Ughhhh, don't seem to be imported to the US at this time.

Just put a set of Schwalbe HS159s(27x1.25) on an unfinished '85 World Tourist project. Anyone have any experience with these? We won't put any serious mileage on the bike, so I was shooting for comfort.

I don't have them in that size but have the 26" x 1 3/8 version on my Robin Hood and they are a good riding yet rugged tire. Very happy with them.

I've bought 3 pair for two Motobecane and one Nishiki mixte. I used to consider them my favorite 27" (and they are still very close) until I finally accepted the extra size and weight of the Marathons. Now it's a toss-up between the two. In 27x1 1/4 they are noticeably lighter and smaller than the Marathons. They feel great, and are a bargain, imo. And I like some tread on my tires for the occasional local hardback.

I had a set of blackwall Swift tires which were nice and supple with a fairly deep tread. Good city tires. I liked them. But one tire developed a separation on the sidewall. Swift shows being out of the blackwalls but since I only needed one tire I sent an e-mail to see if there was maybe "1" left I could buy. No response. Two weeks later I sent another e-mail asking again. Nothing. I sent a 3rd e-mail asking when the blackwalls would be back in stock. Nothing.

So I bought a pair of Kenda K35 tires from Amazon. One was made in Taiwan and the other in Indonesia. Same brand and model but VERY different tires. ( the Indonesia tire is very stiff, has a harder rubber and the raised center on the tread is skinnier ).

Now I have ordered a set of Pasela's. Wish me luck.

BTW - I bought a set of Gravel Kings from Swift earlier this year and the site looks active. ?

Follow up - 3 months on the Pasela's and they have been very, very good.
Never heard from Swift.

I have the Swift Sand Canyon on my Dawes. They work fine, but don't believe the stated 37mm width. As someone else indicated (maybe on this thread) they are built on the same casing as 32mm Paselas, so it's not surprising that they only measure 32mm wide. There's no reason to purchase them unless you absolutely, positively must have the Sand Canyon's tread.
