GOLD vintage Alan/Campagnolo? What did I just buy??

Hello everyone, I am new to this forum and cycling all together. So with that in mind I would seriously appreciate help identifying my new bike. It appears to be a golden Italian Alan frame with many Campagnolo/Takagi/Suntour/EDCO/SP parts with with Mavic Module E wheels. I have no clue about any of these manufacturers and I am wondering if this bike was a good buy. If anyone has any clue to the bikes age, value, or quality any input would be greatly appreciated. It seems to ride well and shifts great, the wheels are straight and true and is so far a blast to ride. I will do my best to post as many pics as possible. Thanks for checking this thing out!! If you have any questions for me, just let me know.

A very high quality bike with top end parts. ALAN was the first maker of alu frames that hit
the mass market. This is a super record
model, top of the line. Edco is a specialty swiss co
ponent maker, high quality and expensive.

Cool looking bike. Certainly not original equipment as I can't imagine there being a bike with such a mish-mash of parts. Looks like someone really like GOLD! No way to tell you if it was a good buy without knowing what you paid. It's definitely not junk as it's a good frame with good components and you say it rides well.

you bought a very cool Italian Frame with a mix of high end italian and japanese components. Are the brakes suntour superbe? They look like it and if so it was the top end from that manufacturer. The Rear derailleur was top notch Campagnolo, made in Italy. The cranks are mid range but the gold anodizing on these cranks is not that common and they are very cool. Takagi made cranks that were paired with shimano parts in the 1970s. They had an agreement for a few years before shimano decided to take over the market. That is one cool bike for a first buy.

Thanks for all the responses and knowledge. The brakes are in fact complete Suntour Superbe. And as far as the good deal portion goes, I found it in a customers garage while i was doing some work at his home. I picked it up from him for 200 bucks. I was hoping it was worth at least what I paid for it. But either way, it is still a fun machine.

Welcome to the forum and that is an AWESOME bike. ALANs were cool bikes that came out in the 70's. One of the first bikes that could be built up and break the 20 pound barrier. Yours in gold with the gold crank is just a great example. Enjoy it!

You bought a bike that will last you a life time, and will be great to learn on. For only $200, too! An amazing deal. That is a great bike, and wishes of many happy miles from bike forums C&V.

That being said, that yellow bar tape has got to go ahaha. Black would be a perfect fit. It would probably be in your best interest to break down the bike, thoroughly lube and clean everything.

sheldonbrown.com, youtube, and the C&V forums here, will be a great source of information for help along the way.
(C&V is the friendliest though )

I can't add anything only to say - very nice bike. I love the ALAN's - great riding bikes and they tend to keep their looks in looked after a little bit.

I believe this model was called the Alan "Olympic". This is an early Alan, earlier than the Super Record, which was introduced in '75 or '76. Not sure if there was any model overlap with the super record model, my gut says no, although shops probably had old models they were selling through for some time after the super record model was introduced. Sold as frameset only, so a mismash of weight weenie parts was common for this one, not an unusual build at all for this frame model. Unfortunately, the value of vintage aluminum framed bikes is not as strong as the value of vintage top steel frames from the era. Still, at the time, this frame was probably considered an "exotic".

Yeah, it's an olympic. I tried to correct
my earlier post, but apparently that's a no go on my iPhone. My desktop
computer is already packed for the moving, so i have to make do

Ride it like you stole it, because at $200 that's practically what you did! Great find. Well done!

You got a great deal on an underated vintage bike. I had one for many years. Yours has an odd assortment of parts on it. The 27" rims are curious, but that's less trouble than the tubulars which are usually found on a bike like this.

What a find! I bought my gold Alan for $600, with Shimano 600 parts, and I thought I was getting a decent deal, but $200! Nice . You can view mine on my site, https://vintageracingbicycles.blogspo...1978-alan.html.

And not to hijack this post, but if there are Alan experts out there that can confirm mine as an Olympic model, I'd appreciate that. Thanks.

Great pictures for a first timer. Great bike too, I don't know much about Alan specific pricing, but I'd imagine your could at least triple your money with this. It looks to be in amazing shape.
