I'm not going to buy any more bikes or frames for a year, My agent found me what he says is a absolutely pristine Competition GS frame... and I just got a small bonus... and it *is* almost my birthday....


So I've got another bike to build, now. At least this means I get to thin out my parts bin some, and maybe an excuse to build another set of wheels; Maybe the "avocet" Ofmegas into Rigida red-label rims.

I'm still allowing myself to buy accessories, though. Should I spring for the white Bluemels Club Specials that I know my friend has, or make do with a Khatfulled set of Airweights?

Do you have a cap or did you just decide this? My wife capped me at four. I can buy and sell, have spare parts, and restore bikes for others but I can only have four frames/bikes of my own. I actually thank her for the rules but I'm getting the itch to do another build. I may have to look for someone in IA/MN that needs help building or restoring a bike

I had to laugh when I began reading this thread, because I'd made the same decision earlier in the year. Then, between June and early July I acquired one complete bike, two bare frames and a nearly-complete bike sans wheels, saddle, seatpost and crankarms!

At least during next year on Diego Garcia I will definitely be able to keep things under control

This is a self-imposed limit, if I've done my counting right, this makes number eleven; thre Raleighs, two Pugeuots, two Treks, two Specializedeseses, a Schwinn mtb, my VeloSoleX, and an unbuilt Pugsley. Wait, no, that's twelve; and I can only ride one at a time. SINCE I can only ride one at a time, ten is a reasonable limit. I really need to thin the herd a bit; I'm building one of the Pugs into a city bike to give to my niece as a graduation present in the spring, but I need to figure out what else should go. Probably the Super Course and my Allez, I've never really enjoyed the ride on either.

DD, you're still active? For some reason I thought you'd ETS'd or retired. What do the other jarheads think of your bicycles? I know I caught a lot of static when I was in the Army for being so bike-obsessed.

If I could limit myself to ten, my life would be so much easier...............

This is funny. My riding buddies tease me about it all the time.

Two years ago, I was saying that all I needed was 2 bikes. A go fast racing type, and a sport tourer.
Now 2 years latter I have 4 complete, 1 frame waiting to be built, and 2 incoming.

Funny how they multiply!

Now when I look at bikes, it takes something very special to turn my head!
I sort of wish I would heal up and be able to ride before I go to the poor house with a bunch of super nice bikes!

I'm sure we could work out some compensation, like the use of the bike for a couple of weeks and a case of pop!

I'm in an ongoing basement project and I still have a sailboat sitting in front of the house that needs a trailer rebuild.

I am itching to get the boat on the water before the season ends.

Think about it, as I am certain you would do a nicer job than I would.

campy hubs and deraileurs and 531 frame-even the same color GREEN.(maybe 11 kilos)
she refuses to let me buy it as the Crescent Mixte (14.5 kilos)I got from the scrap collection was free-it needed air in the tires-nothing more.

I can't even remember how many times I've told myself that, until some rusty thing presents itself that seems to be just what I need. I can count 15 frames in my basement right now waiting to be painted or built.

I would love to take on the tommasini build. I can't think of anything better than playing with something I didn't have to pay for. My first week of September is extremely busy so I won't be able to touch it during that week but before or after should work fine. If you are serious let me know how you would like to make the handoff.

I have promised to stop making promises I can't keep! I am trying to be good, but let's be reasonable - if a 1970s Cinelli SC shows up at the right price, I'm off the wagon.

FYI I just saw the same splatter frameset on eBay. Sold for obscene dollars, so the bicycle deserves a first class rebuild like you do.

Also, we may need a new Columbus SLX decal set, so I'll start looking for one right away.

Maybe Cyclomondo has a set in stock. That would save us a little bother I'd think.

Yup, still active. I head off for my new duty station in February 2013 and likely I'll retire in June 2014. None of my Navy friends/shipmates give me any static regarding the bikes, but then again, these days fitness is a huge priority and a tool to weed out below-par people as a force-shaping tool

Sure do. We were mechanics at the same shop, now I drive truck and he works at QBP. He has a sideline flipping nicer bikes, and since he knows my tastes, when he runs across something he knows I want, he'll give me a call. If it can wait, I'll dealwith it when I swing through town. If it's gotta be right then right there right now, he'll pick it up and I buy it from him for his cost plus 1/8th.



DD, what are you going to do when you retire? Take all you learned as a Marine and see if that'll get you over the curb and into the Army?

Actually, I did a 9 month stint in the Army while on Individual Augmentee duty in Afghanistan as the Commo/COR in Meymaneh back in 2009. Us Navy guys showed the Army a thing or two about scrounging for equipment to upgrade the TOC and vehicle comms - and how to use those same comms

Of course, the Army guys on my FOB were all Reservists - the regular Army, particularly my cadre at Fort Riley in KS, were fantastic. One of the best experiences of my Navy career!
