Usually around 70lbs in the rear, with a 27 x 1 1/4 tire. I had a lot of trouble the flats when I had the challenge tires on, 14 or so.... not exaggerating! I've installed some Maxxis Refuse tires in their place and haven't had a single flat since. I routinely pick large chunks of glass out of my rear tire tread, that is a real testament to their flat protection. I think the Challenge tires were nice, just not suited for the crappy, glass filled roads in town.

Two Tektro brakesets came today, R559s for my 650b project, and CR720s for the Fuji Tahoe build. Also a lightly used White Industries freewheel - super crispy.

according to my tracking number, these should be sitting here when I get home tomorrow, anyone got a couple of extra straps for them? got them for a really good price. on the other hand I'm really bummed the postal service has decided that my chain ring guard is impossibly lost in the mail, those old Schwinn chain ring guards are hard to find. It's part of the character of the bike

Very useful tool. Be careful though- those two blocks are easy to lose. You don't really need them, but they make checking dish possible without airing down/removing the tires.

What is this? Do I see a flat wound spring to keep chain tension? Does that also return it to the "rest" position (for lack of a better word) which would be on the large cog? Can't wait to see this installed.

As for what came in the post... not much lately esp for bikes, a few gun trinkets and car stuff.

I installed it this morning, will post pictures soon. The spring does double-duty - it keeps the derailleur cage tensioned, and is adjustable via the detents shown in the photo. It also provides the horizontal tension that acts against the pull chain.

It was missing the cable stop so I built one out of spare parts, but otherwise was pretty easy to install. Interestingly, it is low-normal, meaning that it shifts into the smaller sprockets as tension is applied to the cable, as opposed to most derailleurs which work the other way around. After messing around with chainstay derailleur mounting tab (had to bend it inwards a little) it shifts across 4 speeds with no problem. Chain width is 1/8".

The derailleur shifts impressively well, more smoothly than the claw-mounted Sachs Huret Challenger that was on there before. It gave me a lot of big smiles on my commute this morning.

Flat wound spring telescopes in and out (through tension from the flex chain and cable that goes to the shift lever. from the main derailleur mount to move the cage/jockey wheels over the different sprockets...

Jan Heine has noted this as well -- that you have to get used to the rear shifter working "backward" but that it shifts very nicely with no need to overshift-and-trim.

from my ride this morning, i can say there's still a bit of trimming needed. but less than the Challenger needed, and not on every shift.
