Yeah, I'm really kicking myself hard for my stupidity. There was a guy with a 62 cm Caloi by Eddy Merckx (basically Brazillian lugged Colombus SL frame with Merckx geometry) with everything but the wheels and ultegra bits on it who had spelled Eddy and Merckx wrong (and said it would be great to customize as a fixie) who still had it a day after posting the ad and when I asked him what he wanted for it he said $2-300 B/O. I figured I was on to someone who didn't know what he had and asked if he'd consider $150. What I should have said was, "I have cash and am heading out the door. Where are you?" Instead, I tried to get cute and never heard back.

Although a bit high, when you think about what a set of king wheels would sell for, ten a DA group, and a name brand frame....well...
I tell you what, when you find that kind of bike for 600. I would pay for it right then. It may happen, as I have seen stranger things, but those deals are few and far between.

I'm always bidding/offering low and kicking myself afterwards. It usually takes a couple of lost sales to pry my wallet open.

I have a 1991 PDG Series 5 Paramount that I really like. It is Tange OS with Shimao 105 bits. I also had a 2000 Fuji Newest for a while that was True Temper DB Tig welded steel. I also like all the Fuji VALite quadbutted bikes. Most of these can be found at value prices.

Moser AX Leader, Dedacciai Zero fillet brazed.
Almost the same as my Basso Viper but my favorite is Olympia Columbus EL-os weighing 1510grams. These light weight highend fillet brazed frames can be bought at bargain prices on ebay and there ride quality is superb.

I had a '97 lugged steel Pinarello drop into my life a few years ago. I really enjoy it, I've put a lot of miles on it since I acquired it. I equipped it with 10 speed Campy Centaur and find it to be a great group for this bike.

When Centurion stopped making the Iron Man, they started making the Diamonback Master. I had one that was made in Taiwan, welded double-butted frame, nicely made and very light. I would recommend the Master very much for an overlooked 90's frame that will compare pretty well to the older, Japanese made, Centurion.
Both are low mileage, and were only ridden for a year or two until MTB fever kicked in and both riders drank the 26" Kool-Aid.
Are they still considered decent steel framed bikes worth riding?
Are they worth anything?

I have two mid-80's Centurion Iron Mans, one year apart, both are 48cm frames. One red and white Tange #1 tubing, the other purple and yellow. One Shimano 600 when indexed shifting was considered a radical new novelty, the other the first year ever 105.
Both are low mileage, and were only ridden for a year or two until MTB fever kicked in and both riders drank the 26" Kool-Aid.

A little later than you are looking for, but I picked up a Coppi Neuron with 9 speed dura-ace for less than $700.
Besides loving the way it rides, it combines the fillet brazing of my Schwinn Super Sport with the lugs of my ... well, everything else.
Here's a link to the 2006 version:

Lotsa luck finding a Merckx MX Leader for $400. It's hard finding simply a frame/fork for $1,000 these days. Other well-known brands such as Pinarello, De Rosa and Colnago also tend to be expensive. Your best bet is to search for lesser known Italian brands (Ciocc, De Bernardi, Rossin, Guerciotti, Moser, Gios, etc.) , quality Japanese models (Miyata, Panasonic, Lotus, Univega) and some of the quality American builders (Waterford, Serotta, Davidson). Bianchi were very commonplace in the 80s and 90s, and you can probably find better deals for them than other Italian bikes but quality varies quite a bit among the models.

If you're not super set on it being 90's, the late 80's and early 2000s were nice too.
I picked up...
Late 80's Davidson for $400
Mid 90's Guerciotti Columbus PRX $500
1985 De Rosa Professional $500
2000 Lemond Buenos Aires 853 steel with carbon fork (frameset) for $200
80's Tommaso TSX with carbon fork and 10 speed Centaur $350
1985 Miyata 912 $225
All have phenomenal ride quality. My favorites being the De Rosa and Guerciotti.

Are you my long lost brother? Finally another person who's at least cheap like me too!
I actually agree with the Miyata steel bike post by KonAaron Snake. If you wanting to remain a cheapskate and continue to be my brother then that is a solid recommendation on a very high quality steel frame. Sure there are Italian steel bikes, but your cheap, and Italian steel bikes and the word cheap do not go hand in hand. Also check out Bianchi, Jamis, Lemond, and others that skip my pea brain for now.
Just make sure when you're looking at them you know what you're looking at. A lot of Craigslist folk are selling low end lugged steel bikes like they were custom made jobs because their lugged! There were a lot of crappy steel tubing that was lugged, so make sure you know your bikes so you don't get ripped off.
I own two Miyata's myself but their from the 80's, which if you can find a high quality 80's frame go for it because there's very little if any difference between the two decades in steel technology.
