Schwinn Volare-Or wait for Paramount?
I know the Volare is Japanese, but Does it compare to a Paramount?
I love the color & size on this one, but wondering if it is worth it or should I
hold out and hope to find a Paramount this nice some day (and paying at least as
twice as much!)-

I've heard the Volare referred to as the Japanese Paramount. The detail work, from what I've seen, is very clean.... If it's your size and you dig the Eastern provenance (I do!) then I'd say look it over in person. If it looks rust-free, dent-free, and well-maintained overall, and, most importantly, if it fits, then offer what you think it's worth (which is potentially close to the asking price IMO) and don't look back.

Yeah, I have always thought the Volare seemed just as nice. It's the Dura-ace Paramount.
Better hurry though, i am about to sell of my stable so I can run down there from Canton and buy it from under you!

$800? really? I don't know thats a hefty price tag, I'd risk my luck of picking one up at a garage sale, flea market, thrift shop or whatever other source instead of supporting that massive inflation.

Obviously there're some relative factors at play, and overall condition is key, but I don't see the seller being off by massive amounts for a rare model Schwinn with a R 531 frame/fork and early Dura Ace componentry.
Anyway, it's not about how much you'd pay for it, but how much you'd sell it for if it were yours.

I think the Volare is more interesting than a Paramount, simply because they are less common and of the same top notch quality. Of course, if I ever got one the seat would need to be made from 'rich Corinthian leather.
If the bike in Columbus were a little smaller and just a bit cheaper I would consider driving down.

They are about as rare as hens teeth and the early generation DA components are as easy working as there are. I've been contemplating a modern build on a custom steel frame. This would definitely eat into the budget I've set aside, but I love the color, it's my size and I live in the same suburb of Columbus. Perhaps it's meant to be...

I've had and have the early Dura Ace components. They are every bit as good as the equivalent Campagnolo units and the rear derailleur is functionally better.
I would worry about the availability of replacement parts for the Dura Ace gear. For example, if the lock nut on the brakes strips, or if the brake bolt strips, or both, you might have a hard time replacing them.
I don't care for the color, at all. I hate the name "Volare". Where's they ever cook that one up? Was Dean Martin a consultant on the design of this bike? (bigbossman will get on me for saying this).
If you like the color. If it fits you. If it still looks good after inspection,... buy it!

Man don't mess up this bike with modern components. Get a frame that is more plentiful than this one. These bikes are gems and rare as hens teeth. IMHO its nearly blasphemy to mess this bike up with modern stuff.

Personally, for $800 I would keep looking. But I have never spent that much on any bike, including my 2003 Colnago.

I know this is an old thread but I have just purchased one of these Volare's and believe me it is a very nice bike. Mine had a mix of Campy and Dura Ace but I have since replaced with period correct stuff including the DA Crane r.der. Mine is red and the chrome and paint are an 8+ easy. Now if I can only find an orange one to go with it.

I bought a Volare in '77. I was saving for a Paramount and the LBS owner said the Volare was every bit the bike a Paramount was, at about 30% less. I think he was right and I never looked back, I rode it for over 20 years. If I could find another one I would snap it up real quick. In good shape I'd even be willing to go up to $800-900 for it. The frame workmanship was flawless on the one I had.
