French thread?
Hi all,
I just picked up a mid 90s LOOK steel frame. I need to find a proper headset and am not sure about the thread and type to look for. I noticed that on the back side of the steerer tube there is a vertical section without threads. It is about 4mm wide I think and has sharp borders with the threaded part that is next to it, like: ==___==
It does not seem to be much deeper than the deeper parts of the neighboring threads and has flat bottom. Is this typical of French threading? Thanks a lot!

that could be french, my zeus is like that and it is french threaded. But so is my Mclean, and it is english threaded. Try screwing an english locknut (gently) and back it off if it doesn't screw on easily. Velo Orange has a cheap french headset, it's pretty plain but works fine on my zeus.

French threading pretty much died out on bikes after the mid 80's.....most likely English......
