Looking for a new or NOS 12-24T 7 speed freewheel

Anyone know where to get a 12-24 thread-on freewheel? I'm having trouble locating one. My '85 C'dale was t-boned by a van and the old chain was completely bent out of shape. I rebuilt the bike (I had the technology to make it...better...stronger...faster), but I've got one problem. When under load, the new chain skips on the two most-used cogs on the old SunTour 12-24 7-speed, since the wearing doesn't match.

IRD has one that's close here, but it's 13-24. I'll take it if that's all I can find, but I figure I'd ask here first.

Thanks!

Isn't that freewheel rebuildable? If you're stubborn and patient, I mean.

There's also a 13-25 Sunrace for about 1/2 the price of the IRD. I know it's not what you asked for.

Maybe you need a bigger chainring.

I have a limited selection of Suntour Winner/New Winner cogs. Which model do you have? Specifically, which two cogs skip? Might it be time to service the internals on the freewheel as well?

Depending on which cogs they are, you may be able to flip them to extend their life. You might be able to find a NOS freewheel with at least the two cog sizes you need, if not the entire range. Personally, I'd seriously consider the IRD, as the HyperGlide compatible cogs make a substantial improvement in shifting.

I have a couple of the Sunrace 13-25; the problem I have with them is the 13-15-17-19-21-23-25; the evenly space tooth count makes for poorly spaced ratios. The ratios are too close at the big end, and too wide at the small end. The IRD has nice ratio spacing: 13-14-15-17-19-21-24.

How is the frame? Seems odd it got hit bad enough to ruin the chain but not the frame.

Thanks all. I've got a 53/39 up front, so it sounds like the IRD 13-24 is the way to go. I have been wanting to see how Hyperglide feels on this bike anyway so I should just suck it up and spin faster on the downhills to make up for losing a 12.

The freewheel is serviceable, but it might take me a while to get access to tools since the one coop in NYC is hard for me to get to. The cogs that are skipping are the 14, 16, and 19 (inner 3, essentially) cogs.

Bianchigirll, I got really lucky in the crash–if you can put it that way. At the last second before he t-boned me I saw him and I stood up and accelerated. The passenger side edge of his bumper impacted my right shin–which at the time was my rear leg–and spun me around. The chain jumped and was warped as it wrapped itself around my BB (I was probably still spinning when I was airborne). When I rebuilt it the mechanics at the shop that so kindly let me use a stand and tools thoroughly checked over the frame for any cracks, bends, breaks, warping, etc. The rear rim was gone, but somehow that thick aluminum frame survived and was as straight as ever.

If you're patient and adventurous you can play the Ebay game and look for a freewheel meeting your requirements. Or, you can share information on your freewheel with PastorBob; you may be able to send your your freewheel to him for a spa treatment & makeover.
