At first, I was gonna say "$5? you lucky bastid!"
Then, I see the second one, for $15.

I guess that brings it to a pair, eh?

Great going on both, and OP is the right guy to approach that mixte. Do it up fine.

As I plan to make this a gift for my SO, I find myself torn.. for the bikes sake I'm tempted to leave the steel wheels on, for my SO's sake I'm tempted to buy an alloy wheelset... input please?

Depends on the kind of riding she'll be doing. Anything serious I'd think you really need to go to alloy, but for just bopping around an urban area the steel wheels do have the advantage of being pretty indestructible.

Blah!!!! According to the catalogs this bike should have 26x 1 3/8 wheels, but it appears to have 27x 1 1/4... anyone know why that would be?

Run the steel and update as you get the chance. I do this with my wife's bikes. She doesn't ride a lot, but when I get the chance I upgrade her stuff just because.

That seems to be the current quick option, since it uses the older smaller raleigh axles too >.< This is getting "interesting".

At distances like that, steel wheels shouldn't really have a negative impact. And they do survive potholes and other impacts better. You can generally break a spoke and keep on riding (I recall a long ride on my steel wheeled Record back in my youth when I broke a spoke on a trip and continued on for the 80 miles to home with no problem).

Every Record I've seen came with 27's.

Todays progress, BB rebuilt, headset rebuilt, fresh stem and bars, the cranks from my pile won't work sadly , after some minor filing the rear drop outs now accept regular sized axles...
