"Nothing special" can become special to the right person... (before and after)
A friend at church was contemplating spending $100 at walmart for a bike and I told her there were often good deals used.
I took the challenge and decided to save her money, get a better bike, and get her something with some style.
About the same time a friend happened to save a bike his dad was about to throw away because he thought I could use it, and away I went. It's nice to have a project, and I don't typically get this involved unless its a good bike or its for a good person.
Complete tear down, de-rusting, stripped frame, painted, new rear wheel and tires and conversion to single speed, a few parts bin parts like bars and brakes.
Came out fairly nice and I only ponied up about $70 total. I could have saved $25 by keeping it stock but it ends up being better for her this way.

Nice resto. It will serve her well, and look good doing so. It's a shame to think that bikes like that hit the trash, while magna's and other BSO's are rolled through check out lines.

Well done and I am with the OP. A bike does not have to be top of the line, race ready and ridden by God to have appeal. My favorite bike, in my collection, is my lowly Motobecane "Grand Jubilee"...
...the one that offers the best ride quality is my Cyclops... \
...but I still like the Motobe best. Go figure?-(
