Removing anodizing from NOS parts! a classic and vintage no no?

Just wondering what peoples thoughts are on this. It's always slightly irked me that the finish on Campagnolo's record groups differs. Shiny pedals and derailleur body with matt silver crank etc. It just looks wrong to me. I have a near mint condition chainset that I've considered de-anodizing but part of me recoils at the thought of messing up a beautiful factory finished component, created the way the Campagnolo Gods intended. Anyone else ever face this dilemma?

Keep recoiling. Don't do it. IMO. If you'd like a high shine crank set, why not start with one that is finish-compromised and de-anodize and polish.

+1. NR cranks with good anodizing gradually get rarer over time; those with bad anodizing get more common. Why don't you see if someone wants to trade? You'll make someone happy, and you'll probably get a little something extra back in the deal.

Please don't confuse ebay "asking" prices with "selling" prices. Many sellers never get their ask price. some are far from it. Value is determined once an item actually SELLS. Its easy enough to check SOLD prices.

For Campy stuff, I'd just live with the slight mismatch.

I think black-anodized parts are fair game, though.

Just cut them up with a sawzall. That way you won't have to be "bothered" by them anymore. Go get another set of cranks and sell these to someone no quite so OCD. Problem solved.

Which Record group are you talking about, btw? If it's old Record or Nuovo Record, I wouldn't touch it myself. The NR rear derailleurs had a nice, subtle semi-matte finish on them so I suspect you're talking about "new" Record.

Yes, you're all right. I couldn't do it. But I still maintain that it's poor aesthetic form for Campagnolo to not match their finishes. Easier to spray on a finish than polish to a nice sheen apparently, pffft.

Well, one other point to consider....aluminum parts can be ANODIZED. Maybe you have some scratches, partially worn finish, etc. but you want a 'factory' appearance. You can strip, polish and then send out and have them anodized, bringing them back to the proper look and finish. If you have a local shop that does plating and anodizing, meet with them, show them what you want and discuss it.
I have had automotive trim parts, stripped, cleaned up, re-polished and then re-anodized to protect them. They look FACTORY fresh.
