Ideas for storing wheels?

I have too many spares for builds. Any ideas for hanging them up from rafters or joists?

That's what I do. I was in my metalworking shop this morning, and marveled at all the wheels and tires hanging there. "I don't have that many bikes. Why all the circular items?" , I asked myself. But I'm sure my collection pales in comparison to some here. I use two of those larger, rubber coated "J" hooks available at Home Depot. One per joist for wheels. Two adjacent to each other on neighboring joists for tires.

I bought a whole mess of XC skis for a dollar each. May try to use them to hang bikes, light strong, cheap. Right now i am using a pair to hang tires, but they aren't good for hanging wheels.

I use 1/2 inch conduit as a rod (its cheap, 10 feet is a little more than $1), then I buy coated S hooks off fleecebay. I bend the top section 90 degrees, so that the wheels run perpendicular to the rod. I use nylon zip ties to keep matching sets together, then hang the pair from one hook. Finally, I mark orphan wheels with fluorescent survey tape so they stand out.

Did I mention I have a lot of wheels??

Something similar to these:

Tires don't weigh much, so 10-15 on a ski is ez to maneuver. Wheels weigh much more.

I went on a wheel bag buying spree a few years ago as well as a rim buying too. I keep the NOS rims stacked under my bikes, some with tubulars on them, and the wheels stacked up to the side. I try and keep them paired up and use cheap key tags that you can write the name of the key on to ID Them

See below - More elaborate than it needs to be perhaps, but this rack allowed me to utilize some dead over-head space in my garage.
The rack is mounted to the wall with a couple of door hinges, and the other end is secured with steel cables.
- It stores 15 built wheels with a relatively small footprint.

I like that setup, Auchen, and we need pictures of yours, BG.

Threads like these remind me that I need more spare wheels, and it would be nice to have another 26" fixed-gear wheel so I can leave my winter tires and nice tires mounted up year-round.

Bike hooks I think are worth it, one per wheel. One thing I do is bag them in translucent polybags. Keeps the dust at bay and slows down oxidation.
One thing I used to do and do no more is store wheels with tires in wheel covers as seen often in the 70's most save for the two types of Clement wheel covers are PVC coated...
PVC volatiles are bad for tires long term. A note from experience.

I like to bend the spokes from a trashed wheel to make hooks for the good built up wheels. If you make them 2 different lengths you can get more rims per row because the hubs don't touch. I hang them on whatever rod or conduit type object I can find in the garbage.

I have seen wheels zip tied together and hung also,
they were tied inline-this is if you have the height to do it.

I have a big mess in this department!

Better inventory than my lbs.

Wow.

I am always heartened to see others with more wheelsets than I do.

I love buying orphaned wheelsets, hubs and rims.

Hanging from conduit:

Pretty much a jumbled mess right now. I have another conduit row on the opposite side of the garage, plus lots of wheels scattered throughout the workshop.

I need to get some of them up in the rafters.

Bikes: Giant Excursion, Raleigh Sports, Raleigh R.S.W. Compact, Motobecane? and about 20 more! OMG

I do the conduit, but just slide it through the wheels. The only problem is if you want the set of wheels in the middle you have to unload half the rack. I use it primarily for storage of wheels that I am not sure what I am going to do with any time soon. Rims and tires go on one end wheels that I will need shortly go on the other.

Bikes: many

Personally, I think some of you with far too many wheels/rims need to unload some to those of us who don't have enough wheelsets. That would be the simplest solution.

And folks with orphan wheels and rims (and pedals, and...) should list them here:

If they want to make some matches.

My annual winter project is to attack the "wheel monster" that lurks in the top of the barn, along with frames I cannot part with and projects that I do not care to deal with. As wheels that come in that seem to be worth keeping, which qualifies as a decent rim or a decent hub, get tossed into the top of the barn. The fall means climbing up and fighting the monster (pull one wheel, 10 fall on your head). Matching pairs are found, zip-tied together, and put back in the barn. Odd ones are put in a pile and I take them apart over the winter (got nearly 10 done yesterday). My rim storage is running short, so I am going to have to clear some them out.

Really like the staggered height allowing more wheels per linear ft.......

and the slick hinged mount idea; stagger those hooks(vertically in addition to the horizontal stagger) and get more wheels in the same footprint

I could use a couple pairs of 700c clincher rims, maybe a whole wheelset, 120-126mm spacing, something appropriate for early 70s to mid 80s bikes (freewheel, not hub, silver, not black, etc). Let me know if you have something you'd be willing to part with.

OH, that means I have to straighten up a bit and take some pics.

It isn't so much a setup as a organized clean looking mess. Since I don't really have any place to put hooks or something for wheels I figured the bags would look neat and make it easier to pull out a spare when I needed one.
