Lately I've been wearing this:

my mom went to Italy recently and brought me back this cap

http://www.evanscycles.com/product_i...-titan-cap.jpg

it's a bit darker gray than the pic. (more like this: http://www.trikotexpress.de/out/pict...nium_hl_th.jpg

the grey parts are wool so it's good for riding in the winter. (I would have preferred a cap made without wool but I didn't buy it)

Summertime I quite often wear a Dorfman Pacific Tropical or a Tilley, sun gets hot in this part of the country. Fall into winter a wool Kangol or Harris Tweed driver cap. When it really gets cold (below 30*F) I will wear either a wool watch cap or possibly a thinsulate fleece. I also wear cotton ball caps on occasion.

Aaron :)

I sometimes wear this.

Merino wool watch cap. Have it on right now. It doesn't come with 'locks though.

In the summer I generally like the traditional ball cap. High crown.

Home grown is far better

Are you into armed robbery now?

I don't ride much in cold weather now, but in the past I wore just a basic cycling cap. I did have at one time a skull cap like a fighter pilot wears under his helmet, that was very warm in the winter.

It's funny, if i'm riding one of my modern bikes i reach for the helmet without even thinking but helmets seem completely out of place on vintage bikes. On cold days i wear a windproof toque (Canadian for watchcap) that can cover my ears if necessary, on hot days either a bandana or nothing(on my head that is). Going helmetless invariably triggers the evil eye from my spouse though. I like the bandana as opposed to a cap cause it A: doesn't blow off and B: doesn't push my sunglasses up.

I love my Stormy Kromer too. Basic black.

ColonelJLloyd 11-26-12 10:17 AM

I don't often wear a hat, but when I do it's a Jack Taylor cycling cap signed by Ken Taylor or this:

nlerner 11-26-12 10:19 AM

A couple of different Walz caps most of the year, and a wool Ibex cap with earflaps during the colder months.

Italuminium 11-26-12 10:29 AM

Campy cap!

On my modern ride I rock a forgettable but hopefully safe Spesh helmet.

That is awesome.

I wear the sugoi wallaroo cap, by far the best value wool cycling cap I have come by.
http://bikeit.ca/m/img/1/2560/1.jpg

then I tried these and they are okay, but fit real funny. THe L/XL would be good for storing your dreads in, the S/M is still oddly large and I have a big head. the top portion is too big.. it's just really poorly designed cut but nice merino and good for skiing.

The sugoi is way smaller and fits more like a traditional cycling cap.

I also have a nice chima coppi cap, which is recycled wool and good for summer/early autumn. http://cimacoppi.ca/
I see they have added a nice merino cap to their line also, I'll try and pick one up in Vancouver this December.

I never wear a hat while cycling. I value my head too much to go without a helmet. However, when the weather is cold, I'll wear a thin Lifa belaclava under the helmet, as it does not require adjustment of the helmet fit. I roll it up so that it does not cover the lower face and the extra, rolled up layers gives a little more ear protection from the cold.

All the above merino cycling caps I posted are relatively thin and fit under my helmet. I additionally wear a thin balaclava plus the thin giro cap under my helmet below -10.

I have a Walz that I wear under my helmet when it gets nippy. http://walzcaps.com/caps_wool-earflap.html

The earflap is less-structured than it appears in the images. It's actually pretty roomy and elastic along the hem so I can tuck my ponytail up under it and it still covers my ears completely. Not very thick but makes a HUGE difference in the winter. I've never needed anything heavier and I live in Northeast Ohio where temps can get pretty durn cold. I use a Bern helmet which does have adapters to fit an inner "winter layer" that has earflaps, but that's more for when I'm skiing.

In my mind caps are the equivalent of jimmy hats. I don't believe in using them. ;)

Chombi 11-26-12 11:57 AM

I dunno,
But I never really get to wear these teeny cyclists hats (no matter which one I get) as they look kinda funny on my big (size XL) melon......

Captain Blight 11-26-12 12:09 PM

I always have a hat or two handy, it seems. Wintertime I *actually* usually wear a black merino watchcap (I have about a dozen), indoors and out. Much cheaper to put on a hat than bump up the thermostat. Sometimes I wear a wool flat cap, or a Greek fisherman's hat. Summertime I use an old kakhi patrol hat or a low-crowned baseball cap. I have a few meshbacks but I don't like the way they fit so don't wear them often.

Never have had an actual cycling cap. I wouldn't wear one off the bike and on the bike I've got a helmet on.

I'm with you, Cap'n. My wife hates that I wear my watch cap indoors, but that's easy for her to say. She's a little furnace. I'm BTU challenged.

Oh. Are we talking about hats while cycling? I wear a friggin helmet. That's my hat.

-holiday76 11-26-12 12:48 PM

OK, you guys have convinced me hats are only worn by dorks. I will not get one.

Thanks!

fietsbob 11-26-12 12:49 PM

When the Sky starts 'crying', I get out my rain cape and SouWester, I wear a Fleece cap under it,
for the 34~ish degree rain. Colder, snow, the one with fleece lined ear flaps is better.

My route is not Urban..
