DL-1 and 30T cog.

So, I was thinking; which is that smokey odor you smell and usually winds-up costing me money; about using a 30T cog on the rear wheel of my DL1. I was going to use this with a 21T cog and derailer on a Clubman style bike to give me a broader range of gears but I sold the bike before getting around to doing the mod. I have a 23T cog on the DL1 at the moment and know that Bikesmith Design have a 26T available but the 30T would give me a really nice low gear when I load it with groceries etc. My concern is would this overload the SA AW3? The 30T cog was made by MIG welding a 30T chainring to an old 17T SA cog. Thx, PG.

I wouldn't think that going with a 30 tooth cog would over torque your AW.

What I would worry about is hauling a big load on a DL-1. I wouldn't want to go down a hill on my DL-1 with a good load strapped on it...

Yeah, braking on DL-1s is iffy at best.

Even if it does not damage the hub, you may not be happy with the extra low gearing. 17 to 30T is a pretty drastic change.

If you have a chain case it won't fit. If you have the Chainguard it will, but why that low? Over torquing the hub is a possibility, but those are relatively cheap and easy to swap out as long as you don't kill the case.

Thx for the input so far. This is mostly me thinking out loud. Contrary to popular myth, the DL-1 brakes very nicely in my opinion, so I've either got it dialed in to my liking or I'm not as demanding as other folks. The 30T is really low and may not be the right choice in this case. Perhaps the 26T. Anyway, thx for taking a look. PG.

I have larger cogs on my 3 speeds. I'd avoid the 30 project. 26 is possible, but still is very low. If you have a lot of uphill riding to do, 26 may work ok. For flats, I think that's very low.
