robatsu-san is right. It's a Japanese company, and in Japan it's pronounced TAH-N-GAY. The 'TA' is like "open you mouth, please, and say 'ah'"). I don't know where the name comes from. I've never seen it used as a name of a person. My romanized dictionary has a listing for 'tangei', which is defined as: [of] being beyond all imagination. If Tange and tangei are related in terms of the corporate origin, the change of the romanized word would just reflect what often happens when names are adjusted for international marketing. There is a more colloquial expression for the same idea, but it would take an entire down-tube on which to display it.

How do you pronounce CIOCC? I can't afford one, so maybe any answer is useless to me — curios anyway

Personally I've always pronounced it Tawn-jay, with "j" possessing the French "j" sound. Sorry, but I don't known know how to write that in phonetic English.

the last syllable is not quite "gay", it's shorter - more like "geh"

incazzare.
Well, I've been saying it wrong. I'll probably continue to do so, then correct myself, for years to come.

Love that movie. Mr. Pelizolli seems like a very nice guy and he builds the most wonderful frames. Also, very cool shop, replete with a "pin-up girl" in it's proper setting!

It's usually best to just NOT name any brand names, when you're in a bicycle store, or anywhere else they use "foreign" type words. That's why I don't eat out much. But I like the Italian language, and can often guess the correct pronunciation. I like Cinelli (chin-EL-lee) or Frejus (fray-zhoos) the most lately.

That's true. I didn't really want to get into this fine of a point. But to settle it for once and for all, I went and got an expert opinion.
My 9 year old son, who is 1/2 Japanese & 1/2 American (me), fluent in Japanese as he is in 3rd grade here in Osaka. He does speak kansai dialect, so fair warning on that, but still.
I asked him to pronounce:
たんげ (tange)
So, live from Japan, in our Esaka mansion redoubt:

My (Japanese) wife also chimes in that the first association that comes to here mind when she hears "Tange" is some one-eyed guy in samurai dramas and is also possibly a relatively uncommon last name in Japan.
