BB shell perforation

The frame is a Koga Miyata Pro Racer, the pic pulled off an expired listing. Did they do this for weight savings, or drainage, or something else I'm not thinking of?

Almost seems like the opportunity for introducing road dust, moisture, or grime might outweigh the advantages. I'd be tempted to slap a piece of duct tape over them!

For frame drainage, in the recently posted article from Sheldon Brown's site about frames, they recommend PUTTING a hole in your BB Shell if you don't have one. Trapped moisture will ROT out a frame from the inside. So they say.

It was common practice, and most BBs came with them, to use a plastic acorian type sleeve between the cups to prevent contanination.

Most frame builders put a logo down there. Colnago used their club, Geurciotti a star, some just dots or slots.

RiGi had there own ideas for venting the BB shell

A 3 inch length of brass shim stock, lightly rolled, makes a nice sleeve. On which you can stamp your ID info if you like too. Still allows the frame to breathe.

The brass plate is a good idea.
I just hope, someday, to own an upper end frame that needs one!

That Masi is super sweet. Trouble is...that "M" reminds me of the University of Michigan Walverines, Michigan State University's heated rival.

Go Spartans!

You'll be fine as long as your Masi isn't painted blue. :-)
