I have a kerosene light from an old fishing boat hanging on the wall. It has a green lens. Is that port or starboard side?

IMO steampunk's sole redeeming virtue is that it gets impressionable young girls in corsets, cleavage bras, heavy leather S&M gear, and lots of slu##y, slu##y lace. :)

:roflmao2: The real reasons for liking steampunk!

I'm resurrecting this four years from now so we can have a steampunk zombie thread.

Steam is the wrong way to go. I think 'proper' steampunk bicycles should have aether chambers to store the electrons stripped off the static charge that builds up on the outer dirigible skin before sending them off to the Froment motor for power assist. Built mostly of orolumo, the bikes would be lean, efficient, fast and light enough for the dirigible to carry a half-dozen for use by the crew upon landing.

Only about two-thirds around, alas!

I predict no one will know what you're talking about, because even ancient historians and anthropologists won't remember what it was, because it will have been another brief, forgettable (regrettable) fad/meme that everyone dropped just as eagerly as they picked up the Macarena, the Fat Star Wars kid video, Livestrong, this Zombie nonsense, and Idol.
(Although I was wrong about rap music. That one mysteriously stood the test of the time, and even a (very) few rap songs have become enjoyable to me.)

Indeed, it's possible steampunk has already jumped the shark.

Grand Bois 02-22-13 04:20 PM

That didn't work.

Italuminium 02-22-13 04:21 PM

Not to worry, historians used to joke about "everything happens 50 years later in holland". The fixie trend is picking up steam here, so i have great hopes for the steam punk kids from 2018!

BentLink 02-22-13 04:41 PM

I enjoy some steam punk literature, but agree with Catnap on bikes being genuine artifacts of the inspirational era. Calamarichris makes a very solid point...

Velognome 02-22-13 04:57 PM

I think it might be more in the execution of the steampunk bicycle that is oftern missing the mark. Make some copper parts, carbide lighting and a leather belt drive, maybe some cool suspension parts and you'd have in spirit what any Edwardian would have been proud of.

Oh...by the way tcs, Roper died of a heat attach while racing his bike, had nothing to do with the steam engine....except they said he was 77 years old and approaching 60 miles an hour when it happened!

I kind of like steampunk girls, until I think how long it would take them to get into something more comfortable. (and if tools are required)

That's why God made the can opener.

We all do. And we all have the tools required for their disrobement. But who's willing to dress like a desperate, hapless, recovering-Goth with no self-respect at all, just so we can stand next to the lovely little idiots for the picture? (Notice the clever juxtapositio of WWI medic's c**tcap with the 101st Airborne patch. http://www.calamarichris.com/smiley/jerkit.gif

Even the 16-year-old with the garters holding up the mummy-dressings on her knees isn't enough to lure me into that pathetic, spiraling trajectory.

RobbieTunes 02-22-13 11:06 PM

They look like posers. And they're posing. I wonder who helped them with their costumes.

I'm more into the Mad Max types, with functionality, ingenuity, a little grit, following the "unwritten" script: necessity is the mother of invention. That type of steampunk seems more real and less theatrical.

Baytree 02-23-13 12:53 AM

Wow. I'm kind of startled how fast a thread about unusual bicycles turned into posts objectifying women. Can we keep it focused on the bikes, guys?

I wouldn't call myself a fan but somebody organized a steampunk ride here during bike month last summer and it was fun. This was my effort using materials at hand:

That's one of the best steampunk bikes I've seen! Very classy. How's the handling with that boiler on the back?

I also like it, and respect that it is art, but how to turn the front wheel?
I see the arm and ball joint but I cant figure it.
