Steampunk fans?
Since there are so many of us who share a love of vintage bicycles, I'm wondering if there are any others, like me, who love "steampunk" creations? I would GLADLY own and proudly ride any of these:

Yep, I like 'em.

I'd ride #1, would be better with a steam engine but I'd spin the cranks if the opportunity arose.

The creation in #2 really should have rusty cottered crank arms.

best thread of the week!

This doesn't really qualify as a "bicycle" since it's not pedal powered... but with this one, you'd never have to complain about a cold ride!

Guess I'm not a fan. Or ambivalent. But I tend toward wariness on most things trendy.

Live steam bicycle being ridden at speed. Starts about 1 minute into the video with the steam up and the ride begins about 2:43 minutes in....very cool!

No, don't like steampunk as a fashion, but I'm totally fascinated by steam powered bikes.

I have to admit though, that motorcycle above is beautiful, in it's own way.
|
They're some neat contraptions, but I'd much rather chap my rump riding than scald the onions on that boilerpot...

One virtue bicycles share is efficiency, which is generally eschewed by steampunks.
IMO steampunk's sole redeeming virtue is that it gets impressionable young girls in corsets, cleavage bras, heavy leather S&M gear, and lots of slu##y, slu##y lace. :) http://img1.ak.crunchyroll.com/i/spi...91856_full.jpg |
A lot of steampunk stuff is pretty cool (computer keyboards that look like mechanical typewriters, e.g.), but the problem with steampunking bikes is that they already feature exposed machinery, shiny metal, gears, chains, etc. Hanging useless but functional-looking bits from eyeglasses, clothing and the like can be cute and attractive. Kitting out a bicycle with junk just looks junky to me.

I'm a science fiction fan, and I like the concept of steampunk: yesterday's tomorrow. Very romantic. I loved movies like "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" and especially Terry Gilliam's "Brazil".
But actually use it? Nah, there's a reason the future turned out different. |

Frank Lentz's "round the world" bike from the 1890's is cooler than any of those steampunk designs: http://i630.photobucket.com/albums/u...z-1024x867.jpg |
That wooden one looks like a combo bike / sybian.
|
I find some of the steampunk stuff fascinating to look at, but that doesn't mean that I want to own any of it.
