Gold chains?

Has anyone been able to find any manufacturers that make gold chains suitable for a 6 speed? Eventually I'm going to have to replace the stock chain on my Fuji, and all I'm coming up with on my own are ones designed for fixies.

Vintage NOS Regina? Too spendy.

If it is a riding bike I wouldn't bother with a gold chain. You could always take the gold chain off before it wears out and save it for wall hanging times.

Gold colored chains for 5/6 speeds from Sedis pops up once in a while at eBay...Not exactly cheap, but mostly cheaper than Italian equivalents....

At this point, there's so little gold visible, I would pretty much have to run someone over for it to be seen. Unless I had seen it in the catalog, and went looking for it, I wouldn't have even known.

I cant think of a reason why I would.....hmmmmmm?

Maybe a picture of said Fuji would be in order?

'Back in the day' Shimano had a Ultra-Glide (UG) Gold chain. Many of the late '70s/early 80s manufacturers used them from the factory. Very appropriate for a '80s rebuild.

There I was, finishing the 40 mile NYC 5 Boro bike ride last week on Staten Island. A beautiful sunny day, cruising in my Mini Cooper S, Peugeot on the rack, and the radio starts playing that very same BeeGees tune. You couldn't ask for a more appropriate sound track to wrap a perfect day!

How about the KMC D202?

http://kmcchain.us/images/spic/D202-Gd.jpg

It's filed under the "Track&Fixie" section, but it seems to be made like any other old-school 3/32" chain.

Staten Island is full of Vinnies and Tony's, so why not the BeeGees? It couldn't be New York, New York!

If it was Joisey, maybe Springsteen or Bon Jovi.

Anybody else remember the first 'shift-enhancing' chains? They were some sort of Shimano with bulged sideplates to help ease shifting? What were those called... Uni-glide? Problem was that they stretched VERY quickly. I think that chain lasted less than 1k miles before it stretched beyond usefulness! Later they came out with chains with beveled sideplates...

Sedis' "Sedisport" line chains from France have the bulges at the plate to catch the cog teeth and I think they held the patent on that design. They were much the rage back in the late 70's and early 80's as THE chain to have if you want fast shifting chains. I'm quite surprised that people don't seem to remember that..... I guess Shimano's Hyperglide drivetrain pretty much overshadowed anything else on the planet after they came out with them....

The first one is the catalog photo, and the second is mine in her current configuration.

Certainly has the right look, but would it be long enough?

If it isn't long enough, buy 2 and put them together. I have done it with my tandems and it works well.

Redeemed, but truthfully, unless it's gonna be a garage queen, why go for the gold chain? It won't look gold after the first few hours on the road.

Cruising Staten Island with tunes on? ...Go native young man!.....Lil Suzy or at least the Wu Tang Clan...

KMC Colors come in gold.
KCNC makes gold chains, but the price..ooh.

F red 05-15-13 07:59 PM

This may not be popular but some BELL branded chains (made by KMC?) have gold outer links. You can find them in big-box stores. The actual chain color varies from package to package, I think some are gold/brown, some are silver/brown and some are brown/brown.

Just casually cruised through some of the listings on eBay. Eep.

Not quite ready to spend half of what I spent on the bike on a chain. The solution for this, obviously, is to start hunting for a more expensive bike.

I considered then "Useless Glide". I was given a chain and freewheel by Shimano before they first came out. I was to ride them for a month then report. I took them off after 3 weeks. The chain had stretched so much that it skipped. When Shimano picked them up, they were a bit surprised. "You did not use many of the cogs?" True, it was a 14-28 and the last two never saw use. What did you think? I advised the test ended early as I found the chain skipping at the end of the third week. It did pick up gears a bit quicker than a Regina Chain, but it would be too expensive for me to replace chains that often.

Yes, there is the Regina Oro Record with Drilled side plates and a bit shorter link width, shifts a bit better, lasts just as long. I bought a lot of Regina Oro SC ( not to be confused with the cheaper Extra) chains a few years ago, but with the prices of them now.... I think for a chain that gets used up it will soon be time to sell. Silly expensive.
