CBR cranks. I just like them. Here are five different styles from the early 80's to the early-mid 90's:

Great close-ups, Ex Pres. That's an awfully sharp lens. What is it?

Awhile back I bought a bike that had fallen through the cracks of the local bottom feeders, it was a mid 80's Vitus 979 with a semi-weight-weenie built. It had a mostly Campy Super Record group with the addition of the Assos pedals, Campy alloy freewheel, EDCO BB, alloy BB and single wall Mavic G40 rims with lightweight clinchers. I paid almost fair market value for the bike...$850? I bought it when I was on 'flip hiatus' so this one escaped my spreadsheet. I sold of the pedals and freewheel to fund the purchase, I think made $725 from both so my cost bases for the bike is $125.

In regards to the pedals, I think they were only made for 2 years in the mid 80's, titanium spindles with oil ports in the body and a weight of ~240g for the pair. Value is ~$450.

Ha ha, you'll be surprised. It's a pocket Nikon Coolpix, about $100 retail when I bought it. My daughter took it off to college (art school), where it promptly disappeared and had to be replaced with a proper artist-worthy Nikon DSLR. I definitely need to replace it with another one.

Jim, I may have mixed up the pics of business end of the Chorus/Record skewers from the post right above.

rootboy 08-01-13 07:33 AM

Well, that certainly is a good lens on that Coolpix. I'm amazed at how good point-n-shoot cameras have become. Recently acquired a
small Canon S-110 and the thing blows my mind.

I had a feeling this would be a popular thread. Been done before but I figured it was time for doing it again. I love to see all this
beautiful stuff too. Some really amazing pieces here.

SJX426 08-01-13 07:39 AM

We don't discuss these much, but I appreciate what they are since they came with the bike and polish up well. They are nearly equivalent in rolling quality as Campy Record hubs without the adjustment or cone replacement issues:

And along the same manufacturer line, I also appreciate the uniqueness of this rim. Found a pair of NOS a few years ago for $40 that I am saving for when these wear out!

I would be afraid to try the GL 280 with my weight!

Sort of a part. I found a new attraction to crowns! Chrome is my weakness for them and lugs:

I know about the cracked crown race. Located it where pictured to minimize the impact. Can't feel a thing when riding or testing for the "bump". Do you know how hard it is to find just the SR crown race? I think it happened at the factory as the seat had overspray on it and I think there is a max allowed interference of only .002 in. It exceeded that with the paint and was slightly under after removal of the paint.

I took this back in January and converted to B&W.

I had it printed on a dark grey t-shirt last week.

Thanks, that's a great story. I have only ever seen pics of those pedals but they look unique and really cool.
It sounds like you turned that bike into an incredible deal.

Dfrost 08-02-13 03:59 PM

I'm still using one of those Mavic sealed bearing front hubs that SJX426 showed in a post above. It has well over 30,000 miles and is clearly the nicest rolling hub in our small fleet, even compared to my wife's Campy Record. Hey, even the 15-16-15 spokes that I used on the first wheel with that hub are still doing great several rims and decades later.

I think it is from an OLD BMX, but it fits a road crankset!

That's not all it got...I think it has an inflatable air bag too so you can adjust the cushiness to your delight!.....

Ah. Just the kind of beauty I had in mind. Whenever I see something like those interesting cranks, D. Dude, I try to envision just how they did that milling. Over my head.

Done in the forging die. Probably a lot of EDM (electrical discharge machining) and CNC work in the die-making.....Forging dies are something I've also been fascinated with but never done.

rootboy 08-03-13 06:56 AM

Hmmm, really? You think Campagnolo did that for Somec?
