I just snagged a Giant "perigee" lugged steel for $30 off Craigslist. Pretty nice rust free condition, desent saddle and rubber.
It has so-so Shimano Exage components, has drop handlebars but has rocker type (exage) shifters mounted on the tops of the bars, 6 speed with bio-pace rings. First time I've seen shifters like that. Does anybody have a clue when and how long Shimano made them? Do they work well? FYI they are indexed and operate , well, like a rocker switch.

Not MY pick, but I had to pass on this story: I was riding alongside another commuter yesterday in downtown SF traffic and he initiated the friendly "nice bike" chat, so I complemented him on his very high quality ride, a Medici with some "patina" but nothing I'd ever sneeze at. He says, "Yeah, you won't believe it but I only paid 50 cents for this frame from a local shop..." Right, says I... what shop would ever sell a frame like that for such a pittance? According to him the bike was in for repairs at this shop (he wouldn't name cause he didn't want to embarass them) and the owner (a lawyer) got into a beef with the shop over the safety of the frame given the fact that the chrome fork and complete chrome rear triangle was covered by surface rust. The shop couldn't/wouldn't give him a warranty that the frame tubing wouldn't fail due to this "dangerous" rust condition, so he refused to take it back and got the shop to give him a new, unrusted replacement. The current owner, who was on friendly terms with the shop happened to be there when this all transpired and offered to buy the frame off them and never to sue them for damages resulting from tube failure due to rust. The result was a beautiful handbuilt frame with a little rust on the chrome for a token price of 50 cents...he's still riding it, of course. Why can't we all be there to take advantage when idiot lawyers run amok?

Not really a find today, just something strange I saw in a thrift store. They had several late '70s-early '80s gas piped road bikes (which is the best they ever have) so I wasn't looking too carefully. But looking at the rear wheel on one, I noticed a strange disc on the left side of the rear hub. It was a disc brake! Not some new brake system added to an old clunker, but some sort of weird vintage disc brake. I couldn't make out the brand of bike as I wasn't wearing my glasses, but it was definitely a low quality bike-boom piece. Oh, and they wanted $48 for it! I thought about taking a picture but my camera phone is basically useless for that. Go figure. Anyone remember anything like that from years ago? This bike looked to be at least 20 years old, probably older.

I had a canadian tire supercycle 10 speed road bike laying around the yard with a stock rear disc brake, I think it was japanese built, it was called "Medalist Mk3" or something.

That looks pretty darn similar. I may try to go back tomorrow and look at it again and possibly take a picture. If they weren't asking so much for the thing I might consider it just for the weirdness.

So, I relisted my Bates track bike at £500, it ends tonight, and I've got a bid! At that price, it means I make a small profit on the purchase of the 4 bikes through the sale of the one. I expect it'll go up to rather more, but interestingly, the potential buyer is hoy888, and has bought all sorts of track stuff recently. I couldn't be about to meet Chris Hoy, could I?

Well, it sold for £500, representing a 120% or so profit, but it turns out to be Ashley Hoy, not Chris Hoy, and since the bugger lives on Jersey, I conclude that he's not going to pick it up, and that it won't get ridden on the track! Still, worse things happen at sea......

$10 at a garage sale

I haven't posted anything for awhile because finds have been scarce for me but here's one I picked up a couple of months ago on Craigslist. The ad said "Trek 760 needs work FREE" After talking to the guy and staying in touch with him for a week, I finally took the drive up to Berkeley. Bike was filthy dirty, had mismatched components of Campy Victory and Shimano 105, and a Matrix wheelset but the frame was Reynolds 531 with good paint and decals. Anyways, spent about $200 on this bike and some hard work but here she is in all her Campy Victory Group

Today’s yard sale find. 80’s Trek 500 with Reynolds 501 tubing. Looks to be in very good condition and mostly original except for rear rim, freewheel and shifters that were replaced with some campy’s. Price out the door…$5.00

Picked up a 1986 Trek 310 Elance bike at a garage sale today--21", complete, all original, in excellent but dirty condition, for $20. Great deal, but the guy also threw in a $90 gift voucher for a major bike tune at a local bike shop--transferable, no time limit--sure made my day!

This is what I got over the weekend. A Miyata 110, a Huffy Sea Trails 3 speed, and an AMF Nimble 3 speed.
The huffy looks nice enough but has some serious issues, I was going to take the headset out of it, and put it into my All-Pro, but if anybody wants to trade me a headset for the complete Huffy feel free to PM me about it. I picked up both 3 speeds for pocket change (literally I took fist fulls of change from my pockets, the sellers didn't even bother to count it), and the Miyata for $20. I'm not familiar with Miyata but it's certainly one of the nicest bikes I've come across so I'm keeping it.

Actually, the detailing was done by my wife. She recommends the color combos and that's what I use when I sell my bikes. Sjhe says it's all about aestethics

Were those brake hoods that clean already, or did you clean them yourself? And if so, what did/do you use? Mine are nasty but I love the white.

They were pretty much clean already but I used baby wipes for the rest or the dirt. They seem to work on a lot of stuff.

I found this Raleigh Technium at a garage sale today, its a $10 special. The frame is 6130 aluminum with chro-moly fork and stays. The components are: Suntour Le PREE deraileurs, Sakae SA crank, Sakae GT bars, Rigida 27" alloy rims, Custom stem, and DiaCompe brakes. The Suntour deraileurs have an age code that indicates they were manufactured in March 1986. The tires are aged, but show almost no wear. The scratches on this bike are from storage, not from riding. As an example, the chain stay has no protector decal, but there is not one mark on it. The chain appears to be original and still has the bluing on the inner links, the way it came from the factory. I estimate there is not more than 200 miles on this bike. I need to change the deraileur cables and check the wheel tru, but thats about it. Unfortunately, the shifters are friction only, not indexed. Note: the rear brake cable is located inside the top tube.

I just want to add, I was surprized to find a frame from the mid 1980's that's aluminum. I thought they weren't available until the late 80's early 90's.

I've had exceptional results cleaning dirty brake hoods using a cleaner called "Awesome". I get it in a pump spray bottle at the 99 cent store.

The Miyata is a nice bike. I did a double-take on the AMF - I saw passed on one EXACTLY like it (same color and everything) today.

I know yours isn't it because you posted at 1:48pm and I saw mine at almost 4pm.
