Pulled this out of the metal pile
Has an old coat of flat black spray paint over it's original orange. ( stolen or sick of the flaming orange) Big ding in it's top tube, but the frame is straight. won't see a mountain ever again. What the heck,, it was free. any ideas on what year,, or how to easily remove the black paint?? |

A few years ago I was leaving our local thrift store after finding no decent bikes when I noticed a brand new pair of Carnac Mountain bike shoes in my 42 size mixed in with the gym shoes. Best $3.95 I ever spent.

My '74 singlespeed ladies Triumph, free! A guy at work gave it to me when his mom kicked it out of the garage.

Found this Bianchi Grizzly in the GARBAGE yesterday afternoon while searching behind a local bike shop for a bike box to ship a bike. I almost didn't see it in fact, not because it was hidden but rather becuase I was so focused on find the darn box I actually had to move the fame out of the way to get at the boxes! Only after it banged me in the shin did I realize what was in my hands! (My shin says: "Better the be lucky then good")
I looked it over and it was arrow straight had deraileurs front and rear as well as brakes, shifters and stem/seatpost. I asked the bike shop about it and they said it was a customers bike that had been stripped down of the components the customer wanted transfered to his newly purchased bike. The shop has no use for an "old" steel MTB. HA! I say. Power to the "U" brake! I had alot of fun last night in the garage with my new toy. I the bike apart, right down to the bottom bracket bearings, cleaned everything up, converted it over to work with a 7 speed set of wheels/tires I had laying around, added an XT rear cogset, new chain, new saddle, cables handlebars and viola! All I need now is a set of Canti brake levers... here is come eBAY! Maybe in a garbage can near you... Here's todays catch. Campy record hubs (I do believe) laced to Mavic GL330 Tubular rims, front 28/2x, rear 28/3x, rear spacing 126mm, no skewers, bladed spoking, marked handmade. 20$ for the pair. Smooth and hardly used.

Thrift by my place of work-- I go in there daily, have had a truly ridiculous week there. It only takes 5 minutes. Picked up a brand new cloudveil jacket for 2.98 as well, and a pile of good books, some cycling gear, french language tapes, nice northface pullover I gave to my boss (I am a suckup, but she wanted it. No, wait, that didn't come out right). Thought the hubs might be c-record, thanks for the id. Not sure what I'll do with the wheelset, but it's a keeper. Now I need a late 70's PXN10E to stick 'em on.
Thrifts are truly interesting-- I'll go a couple weeks without finding a thing, and then the floodgates will just open. I like this thread, we should sticky it. We're one of the only boards w/o a sticky. :(. |

Here here! How do we do that? Lotek? btw - great catch. I haven't had great luck fishing lately. Hoping for a bite soon. I'm looking for what Pogue just got - only wide flanged, 36 spokes & AVA rims. Was tempted by the set that went for $100.00 on e-bay today, but... |
Done.
I don't do the thrift thing here (I think I should start) but my catches: 1983/4 Trek 770 Frame/fork for $25.00 (ebay) ? year Zieleman Type Special 25Euro (you knew it was gonna be that, right?). Going out later, might have to check the local thrifts (if I can find em). Marty |
i think my latest cool find is remembering how cool it is to be riding my bike again.
|
Not so much Catch of the Day, but I've had a couple of good catches within the last year or so:
New Balance cycling shoes, size 13. These were sitting on top of somebody's trash a few blocks away from me, and by jove they fit! 64cm Trek 460 frame & fork. It's my current fixed gear, and one of my LBS guys let me have it for $5... I'm the tallest guy he knows :) |

Beautiful! I'm jealous! How did you score that Raleigh?
|
Auction with a Schwinn Premis (80's Mississippi Schwinn, I think. Columbus Tenax DB frame, nice Sakae/Dia Compe set up. Right size for a freind of mine who wanted a basic roadbike). 25$ for the pair.

Latest catch, I was fishin' eBay and caught this NOS Suntour 14-28 5spd freewheel... $2.75..! Of course, there's $5 shipping, but still a good catch.
|
Ah, NOS. Sometimes it's just too pretty to put on a bike. Two prong Suntour, that thing has to date a bit. Cool find!
|
Guessing it's late '70s-early '80s from the packaging. Amazing how much a Regina or Everest would go for in that size ($50+ in NOS), yet this Suntour was overlooked -and should work better too! I should receive it in a few days...just hope it's not French threaded...
