That's when you sell one of the bikes you have to go after the new one. If you can't justify selling one of your bikes to own it, you don't really want it that badly.

With me, it's usually some other effing thing that takes all the cash- we just bought a new washing machine, then the dryer went out. Then I realized the BBQ grill was rusted full of holes after the damn thing dripped grease all over the patio. So new, cheap grill- $140.
No money for bike toys. Right now.

Just replaced W/D too on vacation home. Just got a five figure quote for tree removal due to storm, limited insurance coverage, priced like buying a new subcompact.

Don't be surprised as that's the norm..
That constant insatiable need for grail bikes is what drives the C&V planet to rotate on its axis.....
If we all always have the money and time to find and buy all our grail bikes, then what's the point of this forum??....
Imagine a C&V world without the usual tensions of constant searching, budgeting and buying......an "overbalanced" environment could reach a state of C&V "singularity" where everything just kinda cancels out and we turn into pathetic cyclo zombies....

When bikes were slow moving here, I focused more on selling parts on ebay. It really helped recharge the bike fund. Then all of a sudden, I sold several bikes. Now its time for more ebay part sales. Its a different strategy than I used in the past.

Yes, actually.. I have been out of work since mid June, so yeah it probably wouldn't be fair to my S/O to withdraw several hundred dollars for yet another unneeded bike. I really can't tell if that's an honest question, or if you were just purposely trying to be rude. It was worded pretty vaguely, so I am giving you the benefit of the doubt.,,,,BD

No. I wasn't trying to be rude and I apologize if it sounded like that. Rather, I was thinking of the adage that whenever you have a 50/50 chance of something going wrong, 9 times out of 10 it will. Which is to say, it always seems like the best stuff comes around when you can't go after it. That was the thread's title line, after all! There are many things in the world I wish I could buy but it's best if I don't, for various reasons including financial.

BD, I'd go look at it if I were you. You may go away not really wanting it, maybe there is some damage you don's see in the photo? Or, if you really gotta have it, see if the seller will work with you? I humped shingles to the roof of a three story house and some other odd jobs for a used car once. Maybe the sellers selling because he needs something you can provide? Never know 'till you ask!

Ahhh, stupid text not conveying true feeling again. No worries then. I have been called out on the boards for personal issues a lot the last several months, so I can never tell anymore. Guess I should just stop mentioning anything at all if I don't want that to happen. As a matter of fact, that sounds like an awesome idea.,,,,,,,BD

I must not want it that badly then. Honestly, I've hardly thought about it all day. I just traded my Haro Escape for a Trek 7600 multitrack that doesn't fit me. But, Parallax Deore XT hubs with Matrix IS0 3 aero rims, eight speed, and perfectly true. First or slight second gen XTR RD, Deore LX mega 9 front derailleur, Shimano Tri color double crank. Shimano 600 8 x 2 STI's that function perfectly, Front Deore XT V brakes. Chris King 1 1/8" threaded headset, Salsa stem. Slightly faded DEAN 27.2 seatpost. Some good can come out of all those parts.,,,,BD
Annnnd, to top it all off I got a rusty basket case prewar(possibly) balloon tire frame. Needs a lot of work, but was green and cream, with red pinstripes. It might be the basis for a klunker, or just a rat rod. Nice condition riveted "Texas Star" headbadge on it, but you can see two sideways rivet holes under the edge, ala Columbia. The rivets holding on the headbadge look original though?

That's not your fault. It's mine for not being explicit enough. I've been known to introduce humor a little too wryly. However it wasn't meant to be solely humorous, but to present a grain of truth in a different light.
No, that would be a bad thing. We would lose a valued contributor and you would lose a nice recreational outlet. Conversation is cheap (meaning it costs almost nothing) but nevertheless it has value and all of us value it. And anyone who can't tolerate someone else' opinion here is being a jerk.
Sorry to hear you have been out of work. Been there myself on occasion. No fun but lots of anxiety. I told myself more than once that I am a survivor. I like to think that it helped me stay positive. Also going for a ride.

One of my favorite bikes is the Bianchi. I was looking for a bike to build and own and ride. I looked easily for 6 months or more. Anything that fit me was waaay over my budget. Anything within my budget was either 5cm too small or 5cm too big or just a piece of junk. Lots of junk. Lots of 63cm or 52cm frames. More junk. Or marginal bikes for $1000 or more. Did I mention junk? I wasn't going there.
Then the Bianchi frame showed up on ebay. I didn't expect to win it but I did. Then I thought it must be junk because no one else wanted it. In the end a piece of gold had dropped into my lap unexpectedly.

Points taken. I have a dry sense of humor sometimes as well. I was thinking personal stuff mostly, as far as not mentioning anything.
This is the rust bucket. I think I can make something out of this? Looks to be possibly prewar, or not long post. I have plenty of friends with parts, but again it comes back to the money thing. This is going to take a serious blasting, and MANY coats of primer/filler to make anything presentable.,,,,BD

It may make a nice klunker after all, The tubing is probably thicker than anything in the garage, and hand "brazed". I say brazed but I have no idea what they used. It's grey, whatever it is? The head tube joints are mitered, no protruding holes and the head tube is a solid tube. Hmmm, I have a Mag 21, although it bottoms out when I get off the saddle.,,,,BD
