is this worth fixing up?
Any opinions on this trek model year 1988? The seller says it's a 12 speed but can be converted into a 21 speed. I was hoping that it could be upgraded to a 14 speed. If this is possible what parts need to be replaced, eg rear hub, cassette, etc?

I'm hoping that this is a good project to learn more about bike mechanics.
Thanks.

Still learning
First is the seller willing to ship it to Canada free? Not likely.
It is an aluminum frame Trek, in perfect condition it would fetch $250-$300. That bike looks tired and well worn, in need of a lot of money and time. Keep looking.
I don't know if the existing frame spacing would fit a 7 speed. If it doesn't you are SOL, because Aluminum frames cannot be stretched like a steel frame.

The bike would be borderline on fixing up at $150, if it was local. So ounce you figure in the shipping BC it just wouldn't make sense.

the trek is also a small sized frame that appears almost too small for the owner (based on seat post and stem position).
a good rule of thumb for me is a standover height 1" more than my jeans inseam. i usually have 4" of seatpost showing on these bikes.
so many new to biking think more gearing is better. i will admit, i like a 12-speed better than 10, but 12 is really perfect for my needs. after all, i'm not touring the cascades with 20 pounds of gear nor racing across the alps.
