After going over the bike today, new cables, housing, tires, a tube, bartape, bearings, and maybe pads. I estimate $60-$75, of which 1/2 would be tire budget.
The final weight isn't as important as the initial weigh in... So far I'm only in for $25, but after getting new rims laced to the dura-ace hubs I have and a new set of Gatorskins it will be a nice chunk of change. It is purely a matter of aesthetics, but I'm not a fan of 80's bikes.

The way Schwinn recommended starting in 1974 and sold kits for was to use a BMX conversion kit with a 1974 and up Le Tour crankset. Other cranksets can be used also. You can still buy the Bottom bracket at a BMX shop for under $25 for a good one. In the BB pictures there are two BBs. One as it comes and one with the parts laid out. Doing the swap this way with a used crank you should be able to get it done less than $50. Roger
I will get pics of my 73 Sunset orange Varsity I combined with a 74 Le Tour this past spring, I used a Suntour V-Luxe GT & a Spirit High normal set of derailleurs and the same BB as Roger's above with the stock Le Tour crankset with a 7spd HG freewheel & chain, it shifts fantastic. I have my 72-3 Schwinn SS I bought almost 30yrs ago for $12 at a auction that I would like to build up to be as light as possible someday.
