Japan Raleigh mixte [Bridgestone maybe?]. Raleigh branded Suntour components and euro brakes I think. Seems solid, just surface rust, and I'll know more when I can clean it up good. Was this worth $40? Have the seat elsewhere. Thanks for looking at this too.

I'll usually pay $40 for an old Raleigh but I don't expect to make any money off of it. Running good and shiny, a girls bike is good for about a hundred bucks. If you put a few happy miles on it call that your profit.

$40 would be about right, given condition and grade. Best suited for someone with the time/tools/aptitude/pile of parts, otherwise, you can end up upside down on bikes like this one.
With a good stash of parts and time, you should do just fine.

I keep hoping to find something like this for what you paid — 4000 yen or so — but that sort of thing just never happens here. Not that I see, anyway. I'd put a rack on the back and use it as my shopping bike.
Nice find. If it fits you, I hope that you fix it up and ride it!
Mixte types were not originally intended to be "girls' bikes". Back in the days, they became popular in Paris as personal transportation because of relatively easy mounting/ dismounting in busy streets. Of course they were amenable to skirt-wearing women as well, and so many of these bikes are now found in smaller sizes.

Looks just like the one I sold last month. 1980 Raleigh Gran Sport. Got $150 out of it pretty easily.
