Stem size question..

Hi all. I need to replace my stem for a longer version b/c frame is a little small for me. I've got a Tange Levin headset on my Peugeot Sante. The stem in there now is an Atax that seems to measure approx 22mm across. I've got Philippe Tour De France bars on there.

I'm wondering if I need to be specifying 22.2mm stem when looking to buy a replacement, or if they're all the same universal size. I'm guessing not. Help?!

French bicycles have traditionally used hard metric dimensions, such as 28.0mm frame tube outer diameter and 22.0mm stem diameter, whereas the rest of the world has used English units dimensions, including 1-1/8" = 28.6mm and 7/8" = 22.2mm.
