Hi guys, joining this thread because in the past year I came across an early specialized sequoia. Based on what I’ve read around it looks like early 1980s.. wish it was a 3rensho, but I it had the common welding on the seat stay.
Id also like some ideas and see photos of what others are doing to their bikes. I’ve done a few things which I’d love to share photos of but I gotta fill my 10 post quota!

Welcome, FlyingSquirrel. Not all '81 Sequoia's had fastback stays. Your frame's serial number will hold clues to the maker and year of fabrication. Please take a peek at the digits stamped under the bottom bracket shell and post them here. Regardless, we would love to see pics of your Sequoia!

There is a stickied topic "Aisian Serial Number Guide" in this forum. Post #1 by T-Mar indicates frame built in 1982 by Miki. So while not made by 3 Rensho yours is still a well made frame and you own a desirable Sequoia.

Early 80's Sequoia
Ran across mine on Ebay and out bid one other to grab it. Drove the 200 miles to the East Bay to inspect and retrieve. Don't believe the previous owner had any idea what he had, was using it to follow his kids around the neighborhood. Turned out the bike was almost completely original, still not sure but believe it to be an '83. Have made a few minor upgrades, Nitto Noodle 44s, longer stem period correct, Specialized Flag crankset 175mm, replacement brake lever covers, and a set of Shimano 600 tri-color hubs and MA2 rims-added a 8-9-10 freehub body. Running friction shifters with 13-30 7spd cassette works great. Did change out the middle chainring to a 40 from the stock 50-46-28, may raise the FD up a bit at some point to except a 52 fore the fast decents here in the Reno-Tahoe area. Will try and add some pics next couple days.

I picked up an early 1980’s sequoia off craigslist this week. It looks to be all original except the front wheel was replaced (rear wheel is Mavic). This is my first road bike, I have always been a mountain biker. I can’t wait to get out and do some touring!

Did similar things that you have done, went to Nitto Noodle 44s and Nitto/Specialized 120 stem, 6400 Ultegra hubs with 8-9-10 freehub with spacer for 7 speed cassette MA2 rims with Panaracer Ribmo 700x28, Specialized/Sugino AT 175mm Crank, and Turbo saddle. Agree with your opinion of the Sequoia excellent bike.
