The REYNOLDS 531 DECAL thread.

By the way, H Lloyd Cycles has a pretty good Reynolds decoder, though it seems there are still some labels that aren't cataloged.

If you come across or if you have a bike with a Reynolds 531 "3 Tubes Renforces" FRENCH decal please post, it must not have the gold banner below, just the rectangular plain version. must be Original, no repros. This decal was manufactured until 1973.
Cheers.
Thank you.

Bikes: Several, mostly not name brands.

By the early 80s Reynolds' cachet had faded some, and the modern decals were much less fussy.

That was intentional. Until the early 80's, Reynolds decals were multi-layer transfers delivered between a heavy paper facing and an onionskin back. You got only one chance to apply the decal; try to re-position it after it touched the frame, and it would tear. This made it virtually impossible for a decal to be lifted from a frame and placed on a non-Reynolds frame to bolster its value.

..and that's the way it's going to stay.

Original decal on a 1950 Norman:

Now I have to apologize that I don't have a better photo of this one, but the little silvery rectangle on the seat tube of this 1951 Raleigh Lenton Sports is the 531 decal. This one indicates the bike has straight gauge tubing.

My 1948 Raleigh Record Ace has a similar tiny little decal, also rather beat, indicating butted tubing. It is like the one on the Norman, but much smaller.

You should see the bike. The photos never really intrigued me. Then I saw the bike. photogravity now owns it. I even took it for a test ride up the block. It's pretty amazing, especially for such an old bike.

Agreed. It's a lovely thing. I took it for a brief spin when Dallas brought it over to ride Lake Pepin.

Speaking of Dallas/photogravity, where's he been lately? I even emailed him a couple of times back in the late Fall but never had a response. Change in focus (sic)? Moved on from vintage IGHs to 11 speed electronic shifting CF crotch rockets?
