Hellenic frame, modern, affordable?

Yet another long term project, I'd like a frameset with hellenic stays, preferably a modern production model with not a massive cost to it.. so anyone know who's making the "good stuff"?

Bikes: 1986 Alan Record Carbonio, 1985 Vitus Plus Carbone 7, 1984 Peugeot PSV, 1972 Line Seeker, 1986(est.) Medici Aerodynamic (Project), 1985(est.) Peugeot PY10FC

Newest Hellenic frames I've encountered were non-lugged/TIG welded GT's But not sure how "modern" they really are (when the last ones were made....).
They are now quite popular with the SS/FG crowd....

You should search for triple triangle frame rather than hellenic.

Triple triangle, hellenic, GT, shogun... are my primary search methods... thank you though.

I bought a complete GT edge (I think) [EDIT: course, not edge] with TIG welded 853 tubing and full 6500 (including flight deck computer) for a friend last year for $500. He's since swapped a bunch of parts around- the most frustrating part was the 1" steerer, but that's not a big thing.

Horrible pic, but you get the idea:

RaleighS,

GTB is the frame to find, out of production since the 90's but worth it. Saw one decked out in black and SS/FG'ed. Must find one myself !

Already have the profile bullhorn bars for it.....

I am not sure if any one other than maybe GT is still making them in steel. I know a few members here, myself included, and watching for the a late '80s Shogun or Nashbar to come our way at a decent price. They are ususally something like Tange Infinity or some other midlevel ChroMoly. I don't either made super highend ones, I believe Shogun may have made a shimano 600 equipped bike but the Nashbars may have topped out at a suntour Alpha 5000 or 105 group.

Are you looking for a custome made frame? I am sure most any builder will work with you on the style of stays but I am sure there will be an upcharge.

I've been on this quest for some time now. Nasbars are the least expensive and most abundant but they are limited to maybe 700x28's or 25's with fenders; unless you do a 650b conversion. Hetchins come up and usually hover around the $900 mark. A forum member had a British frame, 50's vintage that was repaired at some point, needed to clean up the brazing and paint, price was reasonable. Every once in a Blue Moon something odd show up which has kept this search interesting....Good luck!

Mapleleafs-13 was looking to sell this one a few months back, it has an RD hanger

But in the end, I'd have a new Hetchins Frame built.

There's a tiny shop called Britain's Best in Lancaster, PA, that sells British foods such as Oxo, Marmite, and Bovril, tea, tea biscuits, Smarties, Aero bars (not aero bars), and Hetchins and other British frames. Might be worth checking there.

RS,

Only in my wildest dreams.... This baby belongs to another Forum member. I found the image in the SS/FG Forum. Can't stop looking at it ! I'm on the hunt...

Sad note, my MTB GTs are gone. Some sold, other traded but happy I did ! Got an 88 Tempo frame for it.

Still want a GT framed road bike SS. Let me know what size you need and I will look on this side of the Earth.

Whats the story on this? Is it decent or ?

Here is one of my favorites from the historic Hetchins site 1969 Magnum Bonum Hellenic

I wonder if Hetchins could make a Hellenic Mixte with Vibrant stays and.....

It's a Pollard, vintage 50's. Small English builder, not a big following but interesting. I like his treatment of the stays at the top tube. This particular frame has been repaired but not cleaned up. Having a tube replaced kinda kills the value but a nice retro build it would be. Was negotiating with mapleleafs a few months back and all went quiet, I suppose he sold it locally?

Yes....yes they can!

But this is my favorite: a 1/2 Vibrant Hellenic

I don't see why there would have to be any upcharge... still pondering using hellenic stays on some future build as an aesthetic element and like how Hetchins uses a lug on the top tube.
